Chapter 5 - Ryan Was Never the Favorite

The RYAN - LIABILITY box contained copies of every illegal thing Ryan had done.

Transfers.

Messages.

Forged documents.

Recordings.

Photographs.

Patricia had documented her son's crimes better than the police had.

“Why?” I asked.

Nicole answered.

“Insurance.”

Not financial insurance.

Leverage.

If Ryan ever turned against Patricia, she could destroy him.

The realization shattered something in Ryan.

His attorney requested a meeting with prosecutors.

Then Ryan requested one with me.

I refused.

He wrote a letter.

Rachel summarized it.

“He says he didn't know his mother was keeping evidence against him.”

“I'm shocked.”

“He says she manipulated him.”

“She did.”

Rachel looked surprised.

“You believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Does it change anything?”

“No.”

Both could be true.

Patricia could manipulate Ryan.

Ryan could abuse me.

Being controlled did not excuse choosing to control someone weaker.

That distinction mattered.

Ryan eventually cooperated.

His statements revealed the family structure.

Patricia had dominated him since childhood.

Achievement earned affection.

Failure earned humiliation.

Money meant obedience.

When Ryan married me, Patricia saw my wealth as the ultimate family victory.

At first, Ryan resisted her demands.

Then slowly participated.

One transfer.

One lie.

One forged signature.

Every compromise made the next easier.

Then he started hitting me.

Not because Patricia ordered him to.

Because control had become his language too.

That was his responsibility.

Ryan admitted it.

Finally.

His cooperation helped prosecutors build a larger fraud case against Patricia.

But then he revealed something nobody expected.

Patricia had another child.

A daughter.

Born before Ryan.

Given up for adoption.

Her name was Laura.

And Patricia had recently found her.

Why did that matter?

Because Laura worked for Bennett Development.

In accounting.

For eleven years.

Dad's face went white.

The theft hadn't begun with Ryan.

Patricia had placed someone inside my father's company long before I married her son.

The entire relationship suddenly looked less like opportunity.

More like infiltration.
