Chapter 7 - The Birthday Video

One of Ryan's friends had recorded the birthday party.

Not intentionally.

He had been filming the cake.

The video captured everything.

Dad asking about my face.

Ryan grinning.

“I slapped her instead of saying happy birthday.”

My silence.

Dad's question.

Did he?

My yes.

Then Ryan grabbing my wrist.

The flinch.

The entire room.

Prosecutors wanted the video.

I hated watching it.

But something changed the third time.

I stopped watching myself.

I watched everyone else.

Some guests looked horrified.

Some uncomfortable.

Two laughed when Ryan first made the joke.

One continued eating cake.

Patricia smiled.

For a year, I had wondered why I stayed.

Now I understood another part.

Abuse survives partly because rooms become trained to treat it as awkwardness instead of emergency.

Nobody wanted to ruin the party.

Nobody wanted to interfere.

Nobody wanted drama.

Except Dad.

He ruined the party immediately.

Thank God.

The video became powerful evidence in Ryan's assault case.

His attorney negotiated.

Ryan pleaded guilty.

He accepted responsibility publicly.

At sentencing, he looked at me.

“I thought humiliating Ava made me powerful.”

He swallowed.

“It only proved how weak I'd become.”

I didn't smile.

Didn't cry.

Didn't forgive him.

I simply listened.

The judge imposed consequences.

Then Ryan was taken away.

Patricia watched from behind him.

She looked at me.

For the first time, she didn't look superior.

May you like

She looked afraid.

Her trial was next.
