Chapter 9 - The House After Ryan

My marriage ended legally before Ryan completed his sentence.

The divorce was ugly financially but simple emotionally.

I wanted out.

Ryan sought almost nothing by the end.

His hidden assets became part of restitution and settlement negotiations.

The mansion remained mine.

Patricia's belongings were removed.

Ryan's were packed.

For three months, I slept in the guest room.

The primary bedroom felt contaminated.

Then one morning, Dad asked:

“Why are you letting him keep your bedroom?”

“He isn't here.”

“Exactly.”

That afternoon, I changed it.

New paint.

New bed.

New curtains.

I removed the heavy dark furniture Ryan loved.

Opened the windows.

Sunlight flooded the room.

That night, I slept there.

Alone.

And peacefully.

The next morning, I woke at six.

No footsteps making me tense.

No checking Ryan's mood.

No wondering whether a harmless sentence would become an argument.

Silence.

Beautiful silence.

I made coffee.

May you like

Sat outside.

And realized I was no longer afraid of mornings.
