Chapter 4 - The Three-Million-Dollar Lie

The $3.2 million belonged to Bennett Development.
Dad's company.
Three years earlier, money had been transferred into a private investment vehicle.
Authorization appeared to come from me.
I hadn't worked for Dad's company in six years.
I had no authority to approve that transfer.
But someone had created documents suggesting I did.
Ryan.
The investment vehicle then loaned money to several companies.
One belonged to Nicole.
Another belonged to Patricia.
The third belonged to Ryan.
Dad sat silently while Ethan explained.
I couldn't look at him.
“I didn't do this.”
“I know.”
“You don't know that.”
“Yes, Ava.”
Dad looked at me.
“I do.”
“How?”
“Because if you'd stolen three million dollars from me, you'd have confessed before the first audit question was finished.”
I laughed through tears.
He knew me.
That simple fact felt extraordinary after a year married to someone dedicated to convincing me I couldn't trust myself.
Dad's company opened a formal investigation.
Ryan panicked.
He called me twenty-six times.
I didn't answer.
Then he left a voicemail.
“Ava, your father is going to destroy all of us because you're angry about one bad night.”
One bad night.
I saved it.
Rachel loved evidence that arrived voluntarily.
Then Ryan made another mistake.
He contacted Dad directly.
“Thomas, this can remain private.”
Dad put him on speaker with attorneys present.
“Private?”
“Family matters shouldn't become criminal cases.”
“You stole from my company.”
“That wasn't me.”
“You hit my daughter.”
Silence.
Then Ryan said:
“Ava isn't innocent.”
Dad's voice became cold.
“Explain.”
“She benefited from everything.”
“How?”
“She lived well.”
I watched Dad's face.
That sentence disgusted him.
“You stole her money and you're claiming she benefited because you let her live in her own house?”
Ryan hung up.
The investigation continued.
Nicole was located in Nevada.
She surrendered after learning federal fraud investigators were involved.
Then she did what frightened people often do.
She talked.
Everything had been Patricia's idea.
According to Nicole, Ryan initially wanted only money.
Patricia wanted control.
She believed my father's estate would eventually be mine.
If Ryan controlled me, he controlled the future inheritance.
The conservatorship wasn't about today's assets.
It was about tomorrow's.
Dad was sixty-eight.
Patricia was planning around his death.
When Nicole said that, Dad leaned back.
“Well.”
“What?” I asked.
“I'm suddenly motivated to live to a hundred.”
I laughed.
For the first time in days.
But Nicole had more.
Patricia kept a second set of records.
Not at her house.
At a private storage facility.
Police obtained a warrant.
Inside were seventeen boxes.
One was labeled:
THOMAS.
One:
AVA.
And one:
RYAN - LIABILITY.
That was the box that changed everything.
May you like
Because Patricia wasn't only planning to destroy me.
She had been preparing to sacrifice her own son too.
