The stranger from the Plaza survived.
His name was Eric Voss.
Former private contractor.
Hired by Salvatore.
He accepted a plea deal.
Two years later, Mave unexpectedly saw him again outside federal court.
Scar over his eyebrow.
Older.
Less frightening.
He stopped.
She did too.
“You.”
He almost smiled.
“Secretary.”
“Business owner.”
“Congratulations.”
“Prison?”
“Eighteen months.”
She nodded.
He looked toward Vincent.
“Still with Costa?”
“Yes.”
“Dangerous choice.”
“Mine.”
Eric nodded.
Then said:
“Salvatore was wrong about you.”
“How?”
“He thought killing you would make Vincent strong again.”
Mave looked toward Vincent.
“What did you think?”
“That losing you would destroy him.”
She went still.
Eric walked away.
Vincent approached.
“What did he want?”
“Nothing.”
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
Mave took his arm.
Vincent looked down.
She smiled.
“What?”
“First night at the Plaza, you ordered me to do this.”
“I remember.”
“Now I’m choosing.”
His expression softened.
“That’s better.”
