Chapter 22 - Crossing the Atlantic

The private Boeing 787 cutting through the stratosphere above the North Atlantic was a sanctuary of absolute luxury, equipped with a private stateroom, conference facilities, and the quiet hum of jet engines slicing smoothly through the night.
I sat by the window in a plush leather armchair, nursing a cup of warm herbal tea, watching the distant curvature of the earth catch the first faint lavender hues of dawn. On the small mahogany desk beside me lay a dossier on our upcoming European real estate acquisitions in London and Geneva.
The door to the stateroom slid open silently, and Daniel entered, holding two crystal flutes of sparkling mineral water. He handed one to me before taking the seat opposite my own.
"London is bracing for our arrival," Daniel said with a faint, amused smirk. "The British press has already dubbed us 'The Phantom Sovereigns' because of our refusal to participate in traditional high-society galas. The old aristocracy doesn't quite know what to do with a corporate power couple that refuses to play by their rules."
"Let them be confused," I replied, taking a slow sip of the sparkling water. "The aristocracy thrives on lineage, titles, and inherited illusions. We built our foundation on concrete, cold cash, and absolute execution. They belong to a world that's already dying."
Daniel leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his dark obsidian eyes softening as he looked at me. "You know, watching you command that room in Manhattan yesterday... sometimes I forget you spent thirty-two years being told you were invisible. You wear power like you were born in it."
"I wasn't born in it," I said softly, meeting his gaze with unyielding clarity. "I forged it out of every single time they tried to lock me out of the room. When you spend three decades being treated as a domestic punching bag, you either break or you become armor. I chose armor."
May you like
"And look what you built with it," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register of deep, absolute reverence. He reached across the table, taking my hand in his, letting the heavy platinum band of my wedding ring catch the cabin light. "You didn't just escape your past, Meredith. You swallowed it whole."
The private jet banked smoothly into its descent pattern over the British coastline, the twinkling lights of London spreading out below us like a vast, glittering circuit board waiting for its new master.
