Chapter 9 - The Trap is Sprung

The private aviation terminal at Zurich Airport was sleek, modern, and completely isolated from the commercial chaos of the main runways. At precisely 5:15 AM, Marcus Thorne’s private Gulfstream touched down on the tarmac, taxiing directly to a private hangar where a single black Mercedes waited by the tarmac doors.

Inside the VIP holding lounge overlooking the runway, Victor Vance sat in a leather armchair, nursing a glass of scotch, while Daniel and I watched through the reinforced glass partition.

The hangar doors rolled open with a heavy mechanical groan. Marcus Thorne stepped down the aircraft stairs, his expensive tailored overcoat flapping in the crisp morning wind. He looked harried, his tie loosened, clutching an encrypted satellite phone in one hand as he barked orders at his trembling chief of security who had met him at the base of the stairs.

Thorne strode purposefully toward the private lounge, his face flushed with rage, clearly expecting to meet his local fixers to figure out who had frozen his Swiss accounts. He threw open the heavy glass door of the VIP room without knocking.

"What in God's name is happening to the—" Thorne stopped dead in his tracks.

The words died in his throat as his eyes swept the room. He didn't see local fixers or panicked bank managers. He saw Victor Vance sitting calmly with a glass of scotch, Daniel Reyes leaning against the marble pillar with cold, predatory amusement, and me—standing by the window in a sharp, tailored black coat, looking at him the way a cat looks at a cornered mouse.

"Marcus," Victor said, his gravelly voice dripping with icy contempt as he didn't even bother to stand up. "Welcome back to Zurich. Did you enjoy your flight?"

Thorne’s face drained of color, his jaw slackening as his brain tried to compute the nightmare unfolding before him. "Victor... what is this? What are you doing in my hangar?"

"Your hangar?" Victor scoffed, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "Marcus, you poor, delusional fool. You really thought you could use my shipping routes to funnel dirty money through American manufacturing shells like Richard Sterling’s bankrupt firm without me noticing?"

Thorne stumbled backward, catching himself against the edge of a mahogany table. He stared at me, his eyes wide with sudden, sickening realization. "You... you're Richard Sterling’s daughter. The... the spinster. The one they talked about at the country club."

I walked slowly out from the shadow of the window, my heels clicking against the concrete floor with rhythmic, devastating precision. I stopped two feet away from him, looking up into his panicked, sweating face.

"They called me a lot of things, Marcus," I said, my voice quiet, smooth, and laced with absolute venom. "A spinster. A failure. A dark cloud. But none of them realized that while they were busy building their little empire of lies on my back, I was learning how every single bolt, screw, and wire was held together."

Thorne’s eyes darted frantically toward the exit, but the heavy glass door had already swung shut. Standing outside the partition were four Swiss federal police officers in tactical gear, their hands resting calmly on their holsters.

"You're ruined," Thorne whispered, his voice cracking with sheer terror as he realized the magnitude of what had happened. "You took everything. My accounts, my ships, my contracts—everything!"

"Not everything, Marcus," I replied, turning my back on him as I walked back to stand beside Daniel. "You still have your freedom for about three more minutes. Spend it wisely."
