Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The chaos that erupted in the ballroom after Daniel’s command was nothing short of operatic. High-society matrons scrambled for the exits, designer evening gowns hiking up over expensive heels as they fled an arena suddenly reeking of corporate blood. Julian Vance was screaming obscenities at my father, his father hauling him away by the collar of his custom tuxedo while loudly revoking every business contract, social invitation, and holiday greeting card their family had ever extended to the Sterlings.

My father stood frozen on the dais, a broken, hollowed-out man whose entire life’s work had evaporated in less than twenty minutes. He looked smaller—shrunk beneath the harsh glare of the crystal chandeliers, his tailored suit hanging off his frame like a cheap costume.

"Meredith..." he choked out, his voice reduced to a pathetic, rattling whisper as Daniel and I turned our backs on the stage to walk toward the exit. "Please... I'm your father. You can't leave us homeless. You can't throw us out into the street."

I stopped at the threshold of the double doors, turning my head just enough to catch his tear-filled, desperate eyes in my peripheral vision.

"You didn't think about the street when you pushed me into freezing water and watched your guests clap," I said, my voice entirely devoid of warmth or hesitation. "You had thirty-two years to practice being a father, Richard. You chose to be a jailer instead. Enjoy your freedom."

We walked out into the cool, crisp autumn air of the courtyard, leaving the shattered remnants of the Sterling empire behind us. A sleek, matte-black Bentley Continental GT was idling by the fountain where, less than an hour ago, I had sat shivering in my soaked dress, contemplating my own erasure. Now, the fountain’s water danced under the amber courtyard lights, completely indifferent to the destruction left in its wake.

Daniel opened the passenger door for me, his hand resting gently on the small of my back as I slid into the supple leather seat. Once the door clicked shut, sealing out the fading shouts of my family's ruin, he slid into the driver's seat, turning to look at me with a mixture of fierce pride and intense, burning curiosity that had simmered beneath our partnership from the very beginning.

"You handled that with terrifying precision, Mrs. Reyes," Daniel murmured, his lips curving into a slow, appreciative smile as he reached across the console to brush a stray lock of dark hair behind my ear. "I almost feel sorry for them."

"Don't," I replied, turning my head to rest against the headrest, letting out a long, shuddering breath that finally purged the last thirty-two years of suffocation from my lungs. "They had thirty-two years of grace. I gave them every chance to be decent. They chose cruelty instead."

Daniel shifted the car into drive, pulling away from the grand estate with effortless power. "So, what's next for the new queen of the corporate underworld? Now that Sterling Manufacturing is liquidated and your sister’s fairy tale has turned into a bankruptcy filing?"

I looked down at the heavy platinum ring on my finger, watching the diamonds catch the streetlights as we glided through the quiet, tree-lined avenues of the elite district. My family had spent my entire life telling me I was nothing, a shadow, a spinster meant to prop up their vanity. They had tried to drown me, to erase me, to make me a permanent footnote in Allison’s golden story.

Instead, I had rewritten the entire book.

"We leave for Geneva tomorrow morning," I said, my voice steady, clear, and utterly triumphant. "And then, Daniel... we start building our empire."
