Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

General Alejandro Vega had spent thirty-two years learning how to recognize a lie.
He had heard them from frightened recruits.
From politicians.
From prisoners.
From officers trying to explain why a mission had failed.
But the lie his son-in-law told him that Thursday afternoon was perhaps the worst one Alejandro had ever heard.
“She fell.”
Daniel Mercer stood in the middle of the living room with both hands raised slightly, as though the gesture itself proved his innocence.
“She slipped in the bathroom.”
Alejandro said nothing.
His eyes were on his daughter.
Elena sat on the couch beneath the living-room window.
She was thirty-one years old.
A successful physical therapist.
Independent.
Stubborn.
The same girl who had once broken her wrist at twelve and hidden the pain for two hours because she didn't want to leave her soccer tournament.
But now she couldn't meet her father's eyes.
There was purple bruising beneath her left cheekbone.
Another mark disappeared beneath the sleeve of her sweater.
Her lower lip was split.
Alejandro felt something cold settle inside his chest.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something more disciplined.
“Bathroom?” he asked.
Daniel nodded quickly.
“Tile floor. She lost her balance.”
Alejandro looked toward Elena.
“Is that what happened?”
Daniel answered for her.
“Yes.”
Alejandro's eyes moved slowly back to him.
“I asked my daughter.”
Silence.
Daniel swallowed.
Elena's fingers trembled in her lap.
Then she looked at her father.
For just one second.
And Alejandro understood.
Fear.
His daughter was afraid inside her own home.
He crossed the room and crouched in front of her.
“Elena.”
She breathed shakily.
Daniel stepped closer.
“She needs rest.”
Alejandro didn't look around.
“Stay where you are.”
Something in his voice stopped Daniel immediately.
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered two words.
“The phone.”
Alejandro frowned.
“What?”
She pointed toward the coffee table.
Her phone lay beside an overturned glass.
“Look at it.”
Daniel changed instantly.
“DON'T TOUCH IT!”
The shout exploded through the room.
Alejandro slowly stood.
For the first time since entering the house, he looked directly into Daniel's eyes.
That reaction told him more than any confession could have.
He picked up the phone.
Daniel moved forward.
Alejandro's voice dropped.
“One more step.”
Daniel stopped.
Elena gave her father the passcode.
Alejandro opened the gallery.
There were hundreds of photographs.
Family dinners.
Vacation pictures.
Elena smiling beside a lake.
A Christmas tree.
Daniel standing beside a new car.
Then Alejandro reached photographs taken three days earlier.
His thumb stopped.
Daniel was standing outside what appeared to be an abandoned warehouse.
His arms were around another woman.
Alejandro enlarged the image.
Daniel's face was clearly visible.
So was hers.
The woman wore a military field uniform.
Dark hair.
Sharp cheekbones.
A thin scar beside her right eyebrow.
Alejandro's breathing stopped.
For a moment, the room disappeared.
Five years earlier, Captain Sofia Reyes had been part of Operation Night Lantern.
Her convoy had disappeared in northern Syria.
The wreckage had been recovered forty-eight hours later.
No survivors.
Sofia's remains had never been positively identified, but military intelligence had concluded she died during the attack.
Alejandro remembered signing the final operational report himself.
He remembered standing beside Sofia's mother at the memorial service.
He remembered handing that grieving woman a folded flag.
But Sofia Reyes was standing beside Daniel.
Alive.
Alejandro enlarged the photograph again.
Daniel's voice came quietly from behind him.
“You don't understand what you're looking at.”
Alejandro turned.
“Then explain it.”
Daniel's face had gone pale.
Elena suddenly grabbed Alejandro's wrist.
“Dad.”
He looked down.
“There are videos.”
Daniel lunged.
Alejandro moved before he could reach the table.
One hand caught Daniel's wrist.
The other drove him backward against the wall.
Daniel gasped.
“Don't.”
Alejandro wasn't shouting.
That made the warning worse.
“Move toward my daughter again and you will regret it.”
Daniel froze.
Alejandro released him.
Elena opened a hidden album.
There were six videos.
The first showed Daniel arguing with someone inside the garage.
The second showed him removing military-style equipment from the trunk of a black SUV.
The third showed Sofia Reyes entering the house at 2:17 in the morning.
Then Alejandro saw the fourth video.
Sofia stood in Elena's kitchen.
Daniel was beside her.
Their conversation had apparently been recorded from Elena's smartwatch resting on the counter.
Sofia's voice was faint.
But understandable.
“We have seventy-two hours before Vega discovers what really happened to Night Lantern.”
Daniel answered.
“And Elena?”
A pause.
Then Sofia said something that made Alejandro's blood turn cold.
“If she knows anything, she can't be allowed to talk.”
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Alejandro stared at Daniel.
Daniel stared back.
Then Elena whispered:
“I heard them talking last night.”
Her voice broke.
“They thought I was asleep.”
Alejandro sat beside her.
“What did you hear?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Elena, don't.”
She flinched.
Alejandro saw it.
That tiny movement.
That instinctive fear.
He stood between them.
Elena began crying.
“He said your name.”
Alejandro's expression changed.
“What did he say?”
“He said you were the last loose end.”
Silence.
Outside, a lawn mower hummed somewhere down the street.
Ordinary life continued.
Inside the house, Alejandro realized that a mission buried five years earlier had just walked back into his life.
He removed his phone.
Daniel laughed nervously.
“Who are you calling?”
Alejandro looked at him.
“Nobody you know.”
He dialed a number he had not used in almost three years.
Someone answered after two rings.
“General?”
Alejandro watched Daniel carefully.
“I need a secure extraction.”
The voice became alert.
“Location?”
Alejandro gave the address.
“Who are we extracting?”
“My daughter.”
He paused.
“And I need everything you can find on Captain Sofia Reyes.”
The silence on the other end lasted too long.
Then the man said:
“Sir…”
Alejandro frowned.
“What?”
“You need to leave that house immediately.”
Alejandro's grip tightened around the phone.
“Why?”
Another pause.
“Because Sofia Reyes isn't the only person from Operation Night Lantern who's still alive.”
May you like
The line went dead.
And somewhere outside, a car door slammed.
