“She loved you,” Samuel said.
Alejandro stared out the window.
“Then why didn't she trust me?”
“She did.”
Samuel smiled weakly.
“She didn't trust what you'd do to protect her.”
Alejandro understood.
He would have burned his career.
Started a war.
Perhaps gotten himself killed.
Maria knew him perfectly.
He laughed quietly.
“That sounds like her.”
For the first time since learning the truth, Alejandro remembered Maria not as an intelligence officer.
But as his wife.
The woman who burned garlic bread.
