Chapter 12 - Elena's Choice

Daniel expected Elena to leave him.
She did.
Temporarily.
She moved into her own apartment.
She began therapy.
Daniel entered a federal cooperation program and provided evidence against Atlas.
He never asked Elena to forgive him.
That mattered.
Three months passed.
Then six.
One afternoon, Elena met him at a coffee shop.
Daniel looked nervous.
“You look good.”
“I feel good.”
He smiled.
She placed their wedding ring on the table.
Daniel's face fell.
“Elena—”
“I can't go back to our marriage.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
“But…”
He looked up.
“I don't know whether something new is possible.”
Hope appeared cautiously in his eyes.
“New?”
“No lies.”
“Yes.”
“No secret phones.”
“Yes.”
“No deciding what's best for me.”
“Yes.”
“And if you ever raise your voice at me the way you did that day…”
“I'll leave before you have to.”
Elena studied him.
Then smiled faintly.
“Coffee first.”
Daniel laughed.
“Coffee first.”
It wasn't forgiveness.
Not yet.
May you like
It was something healthier.
A beginning that belonged to Elena.
