Chapter 9 - The Brother Behind the Curtain
Samuel disappeared with the archive.
Cole survived.
Barrett escaped.
Daniel was rescued.
But Alejandro considered the operation a failure.
Elena didn't.
“We learned the truth.”
Alejandro looked at her.
“That my wife helped build Atlas?”
“That Uncle Samuel still needs us.”
She was right.
The archive required Elena's authentication.
Samuel couldn't activate the network without her.
Which meant he would return.
Daniel recovered enough to speak.
He revealed one final secret.
Samuel had recruited him.
Not Barrett.
Years earlier.
The order to marry Elena came directly from Samuel.
Alejandro nearly broke the hospital table.
Daniel didn't flinch.
“I'm sorry.”
Elena looked at him.
“Stop saying that.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I don't know what else to say.”
“Tell the truth.”
So he did.
Everything.
Every staged meeting.
Every search.
Every lie.
Every moment when the assignment became love.
Elena listened.
Then said:
“I don't know if I'll ever trust you again.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
“But if you want any chance of becoming a decent man, help us finish this.”
“I will.”
Samuel contacted them the next morning.
One location.
One hour.
Elena only.
Alejandro refused.
Elena went anyway.
But this time, her father didn't stop her.
He trusted her.
The meeting occurred at Maria's grave.
Samuel stood beside the headstone.
“You have her courage.”
Elena stared at him.
“You used my husband.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed my father's life.”
“Yes.”
“You helped create something that killed people.”
Samuel looked down.
“Yes.”
“Then why should I help you?”
“Because Atlas cannot be destroyed.”
Elena shook her head.
“Everything can be destroyed.”
Samuel smiled.
“You sound like your mother.”
He offered the drive.
Elena didn't take it.
“I thought you stole it.”
“I did.”
“Why give it back?”
“Because Cole was right.”
Samuel looked suddenly tired.
“I lied.”
He explained that Atlas had become autonomous.
Cells across multiple countries.
Destroying one leader wouldn't end it.
But releasing Maria's archive would expose them all.
“Then let's release it.”
Samuel shook his head.
“It will expose innocent intelligence assets too.”
Elena understood.
Thousands could die.
Maria had anticipated this.
A hidden filter existed.
Only Alejandro knew the key.
Samuel smiled.
“Your mother trusted both of you.”
Elena looked toward the trees.
“Dad.”
Alejandro stepped out.
Samuel laughed.
“I knew you were there.”
Alejandro approached his brother.
“Then you know what's next.”
Samuel handed him the drive.
For the first time in twenty-six years, the brothers stood face-to-face without secrets between them.
Then a rifle cracked.
Samuel jerked.
Blood appeared on his chest.
Alejandro caught him.
