Chapter 18 - He Wanted Forty Percent

Thomas didn’t ask for coffee.
He didn’t admire the building.
He didn’t congratulate me on the training center.
He sat across from me and placed a legal folder on the table.
“I want forty percent.”
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Forty percent of what?”
“Everything built from the original company.”
I stared at Thomas.
“My father purchased your interest.”
“That is what Samuel told everyone.”
“You’re saying he didn’t?”
Thomas pushed an old document toward me.
A partnership agreement.
Both signatures looked authentic.
Samuel Morgan.
Thomas Vale.
Forty percent ownership.
“If this document is legitimate,” I said, “why wait almost thirty years?”
His eyes changed.
“Because your father destroyed me.”
I said nothing.
“He told employees I stole company funds. Customers stopped taking my calls. Banks refused me credit. My marriage collapsed.”
“You never sued?”
“I was supposed to.”
His voice lowered.
“Then Samuel threatened to have me prosecuted.”
Michael moved closer.
Thomas noticed.
“Relax. I’m not here to hurt your wife.”
“I decide when I relax.”
Thomas almost smiled.
“I can see why she chose you instead of the first one.”
My jaw tightened.
“Leave David out of this.”
Thomas turned back to me.
“You have fourteen days. Recognize my ownership voluntarily, or I file suit.”
He stood.

Then he said something I could not stop thinking about.
“Ask Evelyn what happened in Warehouse Six.”
