Chapter 21 - David Called Me From a Number I Didn’t Know

I nearly hung up when I heard his voice.

“Clara.”

My entire body went still.

“David.”

“I know I’m the last person you want calling.”

“You’re correct.”

“Then give me sixty seconds.”

I looked at Michael.

He didn’t reach for the phone.

He simply stayed beside me.

David spoke quickly.

“Marcus Reed contacted me.”

“Why?”

“He wanted information about your father’s old company.”

My heart accelerated.

“What information?”

“Warehouse Six.”

The words seemed to drain all sound from the room.

“How does Marcus know about that?”

“I don’t know.”

David continued.

“But when I worked at Morgan Logistics, there was an internal account nobody could explain. Old money. Dormant transactions. Marcus became obsessed with it.”

“Why didn’t this come up during the investigation?”

“Because we thought it was irrelevant.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The David investigation had uncovered fraud in the present.

Nobody had imagined it might overlap with something my father had done decades earlier.

Before ending the call, David said quietly:

“Clara.”

“What?”

“Whatever this is, Marcus isn’t doing it for Thomas Vale.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Marcus doesn’t care about justice.”

A pause.

“He cares about leverage.”
