Chapter 20 - Someone Broke Into the Training Center

The alarm sounded at 2:13 in the morning.
Michael and I arrived after the police.
Nothing valuable had been stolen.
Computers remained untouched.
Cash drawers were locked.
Expensive training equipment hadn’t moved.
Only one room had been entered.
The archive office.
Drawers had been opened.
Storage boxes dumped onto the floor.
Someone had been searching for paper.
Detective Lena Ortiz studied the damage.
“What documents are kept here?”
“Historical company records.”
“Anything specific?”
I thought about Thomas.
Warehouse Six.
The missing ledger page.
Then Rachel shouted from the hallway.
“Clara!”
We ran toward her.
On the floor beneath a filing cabinet was a small black flash drive.
It wasn’t ours.
Ortiz placed it into an evidence bag.
Security footage gave us something else.
The intruder had hidden his face.
But when he crossed the loading bay, he looked directly toward the camera for less than a second.
Michael froze the frame.
I recognized him.
Not because I had met him recently.
Because I had seen his photograph in dozens of court documents.

He had once been David’s regional operations director.
Marcus Reed.
