Chapter 23 - Thomas Had Lied About One Thing
We invited Thomas back.
I played the recording.
He didn’t look surprised.
That frightened me more than shock would have.
“You already heard this.”
He said nothing.
“Thomas.”
Finally, he nodded.
“Years ago.”
“Then why accuse my father of stealing from you?”
“Because Samuel still betrayed me.”
“How?”
Thomas looked exhausted.
“When investigators finally came, Samuel gave them my name.”
Evelyn stood abruptly.
“That makes no sense.”
“It saved the company.”
Thomas’s voice shook.
“They needed a suspect. Samuel gave them one.”
I felt sick.
But Ortiz had already requested archived federal records.
Two days later, the documents arrived.
Thomas was right about being investigated.
Wrong about who accused him.
Samuel Morgan had not given investigators Thomas’s name.
An anonymous witness had.
A witness identified only by an internal code.
MR-17.
Marcus Reed had been a teenager at the time.
So it couldn’t have been him.
Then Ortiz found the name attached to the confidential witness file.
I read it twice.
Margaret Reed.
