Chapter 28 - Marcus Came to My House

He arrived at 11:42 at night.
Alone.
Michael saw him through the security camera.
We called Ortiz before opening the intercom.
Marcus stood outside the gate.
“I just want to talk.”
I answered through the speaker.
“Then talk.”
“You found the vault.”
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.”
For several seconds, Marcus said nothing.
Then he laughed bitterly.
“Your father always had another hiding place.”
“My father didn’t ruin your mother.”
“He drove her away.”
“She was stealing.”
“You don’t know what she went through.”
“No. I don’t.”
That stopped him.
I continued.
“And neither do you know everything my father went through. That’s the problem with inheriting someone else’s hatred. Eventually you stop checking whether it belongs to you.”
Marcus stepped closer to the gate.
“You think you’ve won.”
“No.”
“Then what do you think?”
“I think you spent years shaping your life around a dead man.”
His face hardened.
“I did that once too.”
For the first time, Marcus looked uncertain.
Police lights appeared at the end of the road.
He turned.
He could have run.
He didn’t.
Ortiz arrested him quietly.
No gunfight.
No screaming.
May you like
No dramatic chase.
Some endings didn’t need spectacle.
