Chapter 27 - Warehouse Six Had Never Really Disappeared

The original warehouse had burned.

But beneath it was an underground records vault.

My father had constructed it when Morgan Logistics began handling government contracts.

Thomas knew.

Marcus did not.

The property had changed owners twice and now stood abandoned outside Cleveland.

Ortiz obtained a warrant.

Inside the vault, investigators found smoke-damaged boxes sealed behind a steel door.

Shipping manifests.

Employee payment sheets.

Photographs.

Cassette recordings.

And one notebook written entirely in my father’s hand.

On the final page was a list of names.

Margaret Reed.

Three drivers.

Two purchasing agents.

One police detective.

And beside each name:

Dates.

Payments.

Routes.

The criminal network my father had tried to expose had been real.

Thomas sat on a broken crate and covered his face.

“For twenty-eight years…”

He couldn’t finish.

I understood.

He had spent most of his adult life hating the wrong man for the wrong reason.

Then Ortiz opened another box.

Inside were photographs of a young Samuel Morgan standing beside Thomas.

Both smiling.

Both filthy from warehouse work.

Before suspicion.

Before betrayal.

Before fear turned two friends into enemies.

Thomas began to cry.
