Chapter 2 - The Billionaire’s Phone Call

The hospital room smelled of sterile bleach and cold steel.
Evelyn lay motionless on the bed.
The rhythmic sound of her unborn baby’s heartbeat filled the room: thump-thump, thump-thump.
It was stable now. But every contractive wave reminded Evelyn how close she had come to losing everything.
She picked up her personal phone.
Her hand didn’t shake. Her tears had already dried.
She opened her contacts and scrolled past the name Adrian—a man who was now dead to her—down to a single line: Father.
She hadn't spoken to Arthur Vance in three years.
Not since she married Adrian against her father’s wishes.
Arthur Vance was a Texas oil titan and real estate magnate. He was a ruthless billionaire known throughout Dallas as "The Iron Vulture."
When Evelyn chose to build a simple life with a charming young financial analyst named Adrian Cross, her father had given her one final warning:
"That boy is a climber, Evelyn. He doesn't love you. He loves the shadow of my wealth. The moment he realizes you won't ask me for money, he will show you who he really is."
She had ignored him then.
She wasn't ignoring him now.
Evelyn hit call.
It rang once.
"Evelyn?"
Arthur’s deep, gravitas-filled voice answered immediately. He was halfway across the world in London, but he sounded as though he were standing right next to her.
"Dad," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a low, dangerous hush. "I need you."
A heavy silence fell over the satellite line.
"Where are you?" Arthur asked, the tone of a protective father instantly slicing through his corporate edge.
"Presbyterian Hospital. Maternity ward." Evelyn took a slow, deep breath. "Adrian's mistress assaulted me. I was thirty-six weeks pregnant. The baby survived. But Adrian stood there and helped her set it up."
For five seconds, Arthur Vance didn't speak.
When he finally spoke, his voice was so cold it could have frozen molten iron.
"Is the child safe?"
"Yes. For now."
"Does Adrian know you are calling me?"
"No," Evelyn whispered. "He thinks I’m just a desperate, helpless wife. He thinks he can frame me as crazy so he can claim my trust fund and cover up his embezzlement."
Arthur let out a quiet exhale.
"My jet is on the tarmac in Heathrow. I will be in Dallas by dawn."
He paused, his voice turning darkly calm.
"Evelyn, my daughter. Do you remember what I told you when you turned twenty-one?"
"You told me never to burn down a house while you are still inside it," Evelyn replied softly.
"Correct," Arthur said. "Get out of that bed when the doctor clears you. Walk out of that hospital like nothing happened. Leave Adrian to me. By this time next week, the name Cross will not be worth a single cent in the state of Texas."
Outside the hospital room, Adrian stood near the elevators, his heart pounding.
Sloane Mercer was pacing back and forth on her Christian Louboutin heels, frantically wiping her eyes.
"You told me she would panic!" Sloane hissed under her breath. "You said if I confronted her publicly, she’d slap me first! The security cameras were supposed to capture her attacking me!"
"Shut up, Sloane!" Adrian growled, pulling her into an alcove.
He glanced around nervously.
"She didn't react. She stayed calm. Someone recorded us."
"Who?" Sloane's eyes widened in fear. "The old man with the wheelchair?"
"I don't know," Adrian spat. "But we have to execute Plan B before her father finds out."
Sloane sneered, regaining her composure. "Her father? Arthur Vance disowned her three years ago. He hasn't answered her calls in ages. She has no money, Adrian. Her private wealth is locked in that baby’s trust fund!"
Adrian pulled out his phone.
He opened a private trading app.
Over the past eighteen months, Adrian had secretly siphoned fifteen million dollars from the Vance Heritage Foundation—where Evelyn served as a silent board member—into offshore shell accounts.
He had used Sloane’s family bank in the Cayman Islands to wash the money.
Their plan was simple: force Evelyn into an emotional breakdown, divorce her, take full custody of the child, and claim total control of the family estate as the sole legal guardian.
"We stick to the narrative," Adrian commanded, gripping Sloane’s wrist tight. "You file an assault report first. Tell the police she threatened your life. I will sign an affidavit claiming Evelyn has been suffering from severe prenatal psychosis."
Sloane smiled, a venomous, beautiful expression. "And the baby?"
"The baby stays with me," Adrian said coldly. "Along with the forty-million-dollar trust."
They thought they had planned for every variable.
They had calculated the cameras.
They had bought off the hospital’s head of security.
They had even prepared the fake medical records.
What they didn't know was that at that exact moment, a private Gulfstream G650 jet was cutting through the clouds at 40,000 feet, heading straight for Dallas.

And Arthur Vance was already making his first phone call.
To the Chief of Police.
