Chapter 7 - The Viper's Revenge

While Evelyn was building a new life filled with hope, eighty miles away at the Federal Correctional Institution in Seagoville, Adrian Cross was living in hell.
Stripped of his tailored suits and expensive Rolex, Adrian now wore a dingy orange jumpsuit.
His days were spent scrubbing cafeteria floors, and his nights were spent on a thin cot inside a cold concrete cell.
The inmates knew who he was.
They laughed at him. They called him "The Billionaire's Dog."
Every night, Adrian lay awake, his heart burning with a dark, consuming rage against Evelyn and Arthur Vance.
During visitor hours on a rainy Thursday afternoon, Adrian was summoned to the glass partition room.
Sitting on the other side of the glass was a tall, sharp-featured man wearing a five-thousand-dollar Tom Ford suit.
His name was Julian Sterling.
Julian was the Managing Director of Sterling Global Capital—Arthur Vance’s biggest rival in the Texas energy and real estate market.
Adrian picked up the greasy black receiver phone, his eyes narrowing.
"Sterling," Adrian sneered. "Have you come to laugh at me like everyone else?"
Julian laughed smoothly, tapping his expensive signet ring against the glass.
"Laugh at you, Adrian? No. I came to offer you a second chance."
Adrian leaned closer to the glass. "What kind of second chance?"
"Arthur Vance crushed you because you were amateurish," Julian said coldly. "You tried to steal pennies from his pocket using cheap tactics. But I have been fighting Arthur Vance for twenty years. I know his weakness."
"He doesn't have a weakness," Adrian growled bitterly.
"He didn't," Julian corrected him with a sinister grin. "Until two weeks ago. Now, he has two."
Adrian’s eyes flickered. "Evelyn... and the baby."
"Precisely," Julian leaned in, his voice dropping to a low hiss through the phone line. "Arthur Vance has just moved three billion dollars worth of his core assets into a revocable family trust under the newborn's name—Leo Vance. To secure the trust, Arthur appointed Evelyn as the sole executor."
Adrian’s knuckles turned white around the receiver. "That money was supposed to be mine!"
"It can still be used to destroy them," Julian whispered. "My legal team found a loophole in the original Vance Heritage corporate bylaws from thirty years ago. If we can prove Evelyn was mentally incompetent at the time she signed the trust execution papers, the trust defaults to a board of trustees."
"And who controls that board?" Adrian asked, his breath catching.
"My shell companies," Julian smiled darkly. "I can get you out of this prison, Adrian. I have judges in my pocket. But in exchange... I need you to sign an affidavit claiming Evelyn suffered severe postpartum psychosis immediately after giving birth."
Adrian hesitated for a split second.
He thought about Evelyn’s calm face when she had forced him to sign the divorce papers.
He thought about Arthur Vance taking away his dignity, his wealth, and his reputation.
A vicious, hateful smile slowly spread across Adrian’s face.
"Where do I sign?" Adrian asked.

Julian slid a manila envelope against the glass partition.
"Welcome to the war, Adrian," Julian whispered. "This time, we aren't just taking their money. We are going to burn the Vance empire to the ground."
