Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Vipers

Adrian’s fingers shook violently as he held the pen.

He looked at Sloane.

She wasn't looking at him anymore. She was staring at the floor, sobbing uncontrollably as she realized her life of luxury, high fashion, and privilege was officially over.

"If I sign..." Adrian swallowed hard, his voice barely a croak. "What do I get?"

"You get to plead guilty to financial fraud instead of attempted murder," Evelyn answered coldly. "You spend five years in prison instead of thirty. And when you get out... you never set foot in the state of Texas again."

Adrian stared at the signature line.

Everything he had spent six years building—his status, his wealth, his prestige—was vanishing into thin air.

He had thought Evelyn was an easy target: a soft-spoken, quiet woman who would endure anything to keep her family together.

He had forgotten who raised her.

With a trembling hand, Adrian signed his name on the final line of the divorce decree.

Evelyn immediately pulled the papers back, checking every single signature.

"Smart choice, Adrian," she said softly.

She stood up, buttoning her cream maternity coat over her belly, and nodded to the guards standing outside the door.

"Wait! Evelyn!" Adrian called out, tears finally breaking through his arrogant facade as he leaned against the metal table. "Please... just tell me one thing. Did you ever love me?"

Evelyn stopped near the doorway.

She turned her head slightly, looking at him with pity rather than hate.

"I loved the man I thought you were," she said quietly. "It’s a shame he never actually existed."

She walked out of the room, leaving Adrian and Sloane to face the waiting federal marshals alone.

Three days later.

The Vance Estate in North Dallas was bathed in the warm golden light of late afternoon.

Evelyn sat on the wide outdoor terrace overlooking the manicured gardens.

A gentle breeze blew through the trees.

Beside her sat Arthur Vance, wearing an open-collared linen shirt, sipping his afternoon tea.

The news was playing quietly on an outdoor television display mounted nearby:

"In today's top story, former financial executive Adrian Cross was formally sentenced to six years in federal prison following a landmark white-collar fraud plea deal. Meanwhile, heiress Sloane Mercer faces civil bankruptcy and probation after her family's holdings were liquidated..."

Arthur pressed a button on the remote, muting the screen.

"It's done," Arthur said softly, setting his teacup down. "The Mercer family properties have been auctioned off. Adrian's firm is dissolved. Every dollar stolen from your trust has been recovered—with interest."

Evelyn looked down at her hands, resting peacefully over her bump.

"Thank you, Dad," she whispered.

Arthur turned to look at his daughter. For the first time in three years, the harsh, icy lines on the old billionaire's face softened into genuine warmth.

"You don't need to thank me, Evelyn," Arthur said gently. "You handled the heavy lifting yourself. I just supplied the hammer."

He paused, looking at her belly.

"How are you feeling?"

Evelyn smiled. She took her father’s hand and placed it gently on her abdomen.

A moment later, a distinct, strong kick pressed against Arthur’s palm.

The formidable "Iron Vulture" of Dallas froze. His eyes blinked rapidly as an overwhelming wave of emotion washed over him.

"That's..." Arthur started, his voice cracking slightly.

"That's your grandchild," Evelyn said softly, a bright, triumphant smile gracing her face. "Strong. Unbroken. And ready for the world."

Arthur let out a long, happy laugh—a sound that hadn't been heard in the Vance estate for years.

"Then we had better make sure this estate is ready for them," Arthur said, squeezing Evelyn’s hand tightly. "Because no one touches a Vance. Not ever again."

Evelyn looked out over the sunlit estate, taking a deep, clean breath.

The storm was finally over.

She had lost a treacherous husband, but she had reclaimed her father, her power, and her future.
