Chapter 9 - Checkmate in the Courtroom

At 8:30 AM the following morning, the Federal District Court of Dallas was packed to maximum capacity.

Reporters, photographers, and wall-street analysts filled every bench.

Julian Sterling sat at the plaintiff’s table, looking sleek, arrogant, and triumphant in his dark suit.

Beside him sat his lead attorney, holding the signed affidavit from Adrian Cross.

When Evelyn walked into the courtroom, holding her father’s arm, flashbulbs exploded outside the doors.

She walked past Julian without giving him a single glance.

"Enjoy your last hour of luxury, Evelyn," Julian whispered as she passed his table, a sneering grin on his face. "By noon, I'll be running your family’s trust."

Evelyn sat at the defense table, smoothly unbuttoning her blazer. "Check your trading app, Julian."

Julian’s grin faltered slightly. He pulled out his phone under the desk.

His eyes widened in sudden horror.

At 8:31 AM—just one minute after the bell—Sterling Capital’s stock plummeted by 12%.

A massive, coordinated short-sell wave was crushing his shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

"What is this?" Julian hissed, sweat breaking out on his forehead as he frantically texted his Chief Financial Officer.

Before he could process the financial collapse, Judge Harold slammed his gavel.

"Order in the court!" the judge barked. "We are here on the emergency motion filed by Sterling Capital regarding the mental capacity of Evelyn Vance and the freezing of the Leo Vance Family Trust."

Julian’s attorney stood up pompously. "Your Honor, we have a sworn affidavit from the respondent's former husband, Adrian Cross, detailing severe psychological instability and—"

"Your Honor," Evelyn’s lead counsel interrupted smoothly, standing up. "Before we address the fabricated testimony of a convicted felon serving time for fraud, we have a preliminary submission."

"What submission?" Judge Harold asked, frowning.

Evelyn stood up herself, stepping up to the podium.

Her voice echoed through the high-ceilinged courtroom with absolute clarity.

"Your Honor, thirty minutes ago, Vance Enterprises completed the total acquisition of Sterling Global Capital's defaulted debt bonds," Evelyn announced, placing a certified bank document onto the clerk's bench. "As of 8:40 AM today, Sterling Capital is officially in default."

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery.

Julian sprang out of his chair, his face red with rage. "That's impossible! The review board hasn't approved any debt transfer!"

"The review board didn't need to," Evelyn said, turning around to look Julian dead in the eye. "Because your chief financial officer sold the bonds to my private trust three days ago to cover your illegal margin accounts."

Julian turned to his attorney, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

His phone buzzed frantically on the table—a notification from his bank confirming the total freeze of his personal and corporate assets.

Evelyn stepped closer to the plaintiff's table, her voice dropping to a low, lethal hush that only Julian could hear.

"You teamed up with my pathetic ex-husband because you thought I was a vulnerable woman recovering from childbirth," Evelyn whispered. "You thought you were playing chess with my father. But you forgot... I'm the one who engineered Adrian's arrest in less than twenty-four hours."

Judge Harold slammed his gavel repeatedly, looking at the financial documents in shock.

"In light of these developments," Judge Harold stammered, realizing his financial backer was officially ruined, "the motion to freeze the Vance Trust is dismissed with prejudice! Court is adjourned!"

Julian collapsed backward into his chair, staring at the ceiling in total disbelief.

He was ruined. His firm was gone, his wealth liquidated, and his reputation destroyed—all in under forty-five minutes.

Outside the courthouse steps, hundreds of reporters swarmed Evelyn and Arthur Vance.

Microphones were thrust into Evelyn’s face.

"Ms. Vance! How does it feel to successfully defend your son's trust and acquire your biggest competitor in one day?" a reporter shouted.

Evelyn paused at the top of the marble steps, adjusting her sunglasses as a gentle breeze blew past.

May you like

She looked directly into the news cameras—knowing that somewhere inside a cold prison cell, Adrian Cross was watching the television screen in absolute agony.

"It feels like justice," Evelyn said with a calm, breathtaking smile. "And to anyone else who thinks they can target my family or my son... consider this your only warning."
