Chapter 4 - The Cell and the Trap

The cold, metallic click of handcuffs closing around Adrian’s wrists was the loudest sound he had ever heard.
Less than twenty minutes after Arthur Vance walked out of the executive boardroom, federal agents marched Adrian through his own office lobby.
Employees stood frozen behind their glass cubicles, filming everything on their phones.
By noon, the video of Adrian Cross—Dallas’s rising financial golden boy—being led away in handcuffs went viral on TikTok and Twitter.
“Billionaire’s Son-in-Law Arrested in Public Hospital Scandal.”
“Cross & Mercer Shares Plummet 80% in Hours.”
Inside the interrogation room at the Dallas Police Department, Adrian sat sweating under the harsh fluorescent lights.
His expensive charcoal suit was now rumpled, his tie missing.
Across from him sat Sloane Mercer, looking frantic and furious.
"You told me your lawyers had this under control!" Sloane shrieked, slamming her manicured hands on the metal table. "My father’s bank just froze all my credit cards! My father called me screaming—he said Arthur Vance is foreclosing on our estate in Highland Park!"
"Shut up, Sloane!" Adrian snapped, his teeth grinding. "If you hadn't hit her in front of the security cameras—"
"You told me to create a scene!" she hissed back. "You said if we made her look hysterical, the hospital would order a psychiatric hold!"
The door clicked open.
Instead of the lead detective, a woman in a crisp navy silk suit walked into the room.
She wasn't wearing handcuffs. She wasn't wearing a hospital gown.
It was Evelyn.
She stepped inside, holding a sleek black tablet. Behind her stood two tall men in dark suits—Arthur Vance’s personal security detail.
Adrian gasped, leaning forward as far as his handcuffs allowed.
"Evie!" Adrian cried out, turning on his best apologetic, desperate tone. "Thank God you’re here! Evie, listen to me—Sloane set all of this up! She forced me into this! I was coming back to you, I swear—"
Evelyn didn't even blink.
She stood at the end of the table, looking down at her husband with an expression so calm, so devoid of affection, that it chilled Adrian to his core.
"Save your breath, Adrian," Evelyn said softly.
She pulled out a chair, sat down, and placed the tablet on the table between them.
"How is the baby?" Adrian stammered, trying to play the concerned father. "Is our child—"
"My baby is safe," Evelyn corrected him coldly. "No thanks to either of you."
Sloane sneered, attempting to regain her superior posture. "You think you’ve won, Evelyn? My father has the best criminal defense team in Texas. We’ll be out on bail before dinner."
Evelyn turned her gaze slowly toward Sloane.
"Your father had the best defense team in Texas," Evelyn replied, tapping the screen of her tablet. "Until two hours ago, when he signed a plea bargain to protect himself from RICO charges."
Sloane’s face drained of color. "What?"
"Your father turned over all the bank records from your offshore accounts in the Caymans," Evelyn explained with terrifying precision. "He gave up Adrian. And in exchange for immunity... he gave up you, Sloane."
Sloane’s lips began to tremble. "He wouldn't... my father loves me!"
"He loves his money more," Evelyn said plainly. "And right now, Arthur Vance owns every debt your father has ever signed."
Evelyn turned back to Adrian. She slid a stack of legal documents across the stainless-steel table.
"What is this?" Adrian whispered.
"Divorce papers," Evelyn said. "Full, unconditional surrender of all marital assets. Renunciation of all parental rights to my child. And a complete confession to the embezzlement of the Vance Heritage Foundation."
Adrian laughed nervously, trying to cover his terror. "And if I don't sign? You can't force me to give up my parental rights, Evelyn! That’s my child too!"
Evelyn leaned in close. Her voice dropped to a razor-sharp whisper that made both of them shiver.
"If you don't sign, Adrian, the federal prosecutor will add attempt to cause fetal demise to your indictment."
She tapped the tablet screen.
An audio clip began to play. It wasn't the recording from the hospital.
It was a voice recording from three weeks ago, taken inside Adrian’s private car.
[Adrian’s voice]: "Once the baby is born, we file for sole custody based on her 'depression.' Once I have total control of the trust fund, Evelyn becomes irrelevant..."
Adrian’s breath stopped in his throat. His eyes widened in sheer horror.
"You... you wiretapped my car?" Adrian gasped.
"No," Evelyn smiled faintly. "I bought the valet service at your favorite lunch spot. You leave your phone on Bluetooth while they park your car, Adrian. You always were careless with your security."
May you like
She placed a pen on top of the documents.
"You have five minutes to sign, Adrian. Or you spend the next thirty years in a federal penitentiary."
