Chapter 18 - The Three-Word Counterstrike

Lila began to wail loudly, terrified by the menacing tone of the stranger.

I gently set her down behind the banister. "Lila, baby, close your eyes and cover your ears. Sing the butterfly song in your head, okay?"

Lila nodded, pressing her small hands against her ears, curling into a ball on the runner rug.

I walked down the stairs, one step at a time. My pregnancy made every movement heavy, but my spine was straight as steel. I picked up the pen and the document Donato had tossed onto the steps.

"Sarah, no!" Liam shouted. "If you sign that wire transfer, you are admitting civil liability! The federal government will investigate the foundation for terrorist financing!"

"I don't care about the foundation, Liam," I said, looking directly at Donato. "I care about my family."

Donato smiled, a condescending smirk that reminded me so violently of Diane’s face on the night she destroyed my life. He thought he was looking at an intimidated mother who would surrender everything at the first sight of a gun.

I clicked the silver pen.

I uncapped the ink.

Then, instead of signing the signature line, I reached into my cardigan pocket and pulled out my personal phone.

"No phones, signora," Donato warned, raising the silenced Beretta.

"Shoot me, and the wire never clears," I said coldly, holding the screen so he could see the interface. "This isn't a call to the police, Donato. This is the master administrative console for Morrison Maritime Logistics—the private naval port network your family uses to unload forty percent of your Italian wine and olive oil shipments in New Jersey."

Donato’s eyebrows twitched. "That network was dissolved during the bankruptcy."

"The publicly traded company was dissolved," I countered, tapping a series of authorization codes. "The actual deep-water pier leases at Port Newark were held under my personal private liability corporation. The ones I purchased for eight million dollars when Brendan’s assets were auctioned on the courthouse steps."

I typed three simple words into the emergency terminal broadcast window:

SEIZE THE CARGO.

"Do you know what happens when I hit send?" I asked, my voice deadly calm. "Customs and Border Protection, accompanied by Homeland Security task forces, will immediately board the three Italian container vessels currently docking at Berth 24. They won't just inspect the wine, Donato. They will find the four hundred kilograms of unregistered industrial narcotics Victoria stashed in the false-bottom cooling units before she fled Genoa."

Donato’s face turned from aristocratic poise to sheer, unadulterated horror. "What did you say?"

"Victoria didn't just steal forty million euros from you," I whispered, stepping right up to the barrel of his gun. "She set you up. She told the DEA where your ships were heading three weeks ago, using an anonymous tip line from Zurich. She wanted you to kill me, take my money, and get arrested by federal marshals at the docks while she boarded a private jet at Teterboro Airport with your nephew."
