Chapter 30 - The True Origin

"That's not a Morrison crest," Arthur’s voice sounded from the balcony doorway. He was standing there, holding an antique leather-bound journal he had retrieved from the estate safe.

Liam turned. "Arthur, what do you mean?"

"For sixty years, everyone believed Charles Morrison Senior built his empire from scratch after immigrating from Scotland," Arthur said, opening the yellowed pages of the journal to a faded photograph from 1952. "He didn't. He was a junior clerk in London who stole the bearer bonds of his employer—the Duke of Sterling—before boarding a freighter to New York under an alias."

I stared at the photograph. The man standing on the pier in Newark tonight was the spitting image of the young aristocrat pictured in the journal.

"The Sterling family never stopped hunting their bonds," Arthur whispered. "They waited seventy years for the American branches to tear each other apart. And now that Diane is in prison, Victoria is condemned, and the Morrison corporation is liquidated... they’ve come to audit the original ledger."

The phone in Liam’s hand rang.

An unknown international number from London.

Liam looked at me. I looked at the dark, expansive waters stretching out into the Atlantic.

I didn't feel fear. I didn't feel panic.

I took the phone from Liam’s hand, swiped the screen, and placed it against my ear.

"This is Sarah," I said, my voice steady, unyielding, and ready for whatever war the old world was about to bring to my doorstep.

A deep, cultured British voice answered from the other side.

"Good evening, Mrs. Vance. My name is Lord Alistair Sterling. I believe you are currently residing on land purchased with my family’s stolen silver. Shall we discuss the terms of your surrender, or do you prefer we dismantle your foundation piece by piece?"

I smiled into the cold night wind.

"Lord Sterling," I said calmly. "Bring your best accountants, your best barristers, and every ship in your fleet. Because unlike the Morrisons... I don't surrender. I conquer."

I hung up the phone, and the night closed in around us—not as a threat, but as a battlefield we already knew how to win.
