Chapter 40 - The Unbroken Dawn

That evening, as twilight painted the sky in shades of crimson, gold, and violet, Liam and I walked down to the water’s edge at the foot of our property.

Lila ran ahead of us, tossing small pebbles into the gentle surf, giggling every time the water splashed her red boots. Liam carried Noah against his chest in a soft sling, the baby cooing as he looked up at the first evening stars beginning to pierce the purple dusk.

I reached down into my coat pocket and pulled out the old silver key Lila had found beneath the stone months ago.

"What are you going to do with that?" Liam asked, wrapping his free hand around mine.

"Return it to the earth," I said softly.

I drew back my arm and threw the rusted key far out into the deep, dark water of Long Island Sound. It cut through the surface with a tiny, quiet splash, sinking into the peaceful silt below, never to be held again.

I didn't need a key to lock the monsters out anymore.

The monsters were gone. The empire of malice was dismantled. What stood in its place was not a fortress built of fear, but a home built of truth, dignity, and a love that had weathered every war and come out triumphant.

Lila ran back to us, throwing her tiny arms around my knees, looking up with her bright, shining eyes. "Mommy, look! The moon is waking up!"

I scooped her up into my arms, pressing her soft cheek against mine, while Liam leaned in, holding Noah, uniting all four of us in a single, unbroken embrace.

"Yes, my love," I whispered, smiling as the soft sea breeze kissed our faces. "The night is over. And tomorrow is entirely ours."
