Chapter 35 - The Phoenix Crash

The drive from the Plaza to Newark took forty-five harrowing minutes under emergency police escort arranged through Liam’s contacts in the state governor's office.
Inside the back of our armored Suburban, Arthur was working frantically across two laptops, cross-referencing police dispatches from Maricopa County, Arizona.
"It happened at 4:15 AM on Route 87 outside Mesa," Arthur said, reading the preliminary incident report. "A single-vehicle rollover. A rental sedan slammed into a concrete bridge abutment at high speed. The driver was burned beyond recognition. The coroner's investigator found Brendan’s driver’s license and his employee badge from the car rental company in the wreckage."
"And the estranged wife?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Brendan’s divorce from me was finalized two years ago. Victoria was never legally married to him under American law; they had an overseas ceremony that was voided by fraud. Who filed the paperwork in Philadelphia?"
Arthur clicked through the digital filings from the Pennsylvania surrogate court. A photograph appeared on his screen.
My breath caught in my throat.
The woman in the legal headshot was not an aristocrat or an international fugitive. She was a woman in her late forties with severe dark hair pulled back in an austere bun, wearing a plain gray business suit. Her name was Evelyn Cross.
"Evelyn Cross," Arthur read aloud, his eyes widening in disbelief. "She was Charles Senior’s personal executive secretary for twenty-five years. She was the one who managed the family’s domestic payroll, handled the non-disclosure agreements, and shredded the personal correspondence when Diane was indicted."
"She was the invisible hand," Liam said grimly, watching the highway signs flash by. "Diane thought she ran the family. Brendan thought he was the heir. But Evelyn was the one who actually filed the corporate renewals, maintained the keys to the safe deposit boxes, and knew where every single skeleton was buried."
"And she waited," I said, putting the pieces together with chilling clarity. "She waited until Diane was sentenced to life. She waited until Victoria was locked in a federal penitentiary. She waited until Brendan was isolated in the desert. She arranged the car crash to eliminate the last direct heir, then stepped out of the shadows with an unrevoked power-of-attorney Brendan signed eight years ago before his first rehab stint."

"She’s not trying to run the company," Arthur warned. "Look at the salvage contract she signed with the Delaware maritime firm. It contains a liquidation indemnity clause. If Newark Berth 24 collapses today, an offshore insurance consortium pays out three hundred million dollars directly to the executor's personal account in the Cook Islands."
She was going to destroy our maritime hub just to collect an insurance payout on an empire she had helped construct from the dark.
