Chapter 28 - The Renaming

The morning sun flooded our backyard, melting the last remnants of winter snow from the flower beds.
Lila, now two and a half, was running through the grass with a pair of red boots, chasing bubbles that Arthur was blowing from a small plastic wand. On the patio, Liam sat beside Noah’s stroller, rocking the wheels gently with one foot while reviewing our foundation's annual balance sheet.
I joined them, carrying a tray of hot tea and fresh pastries.
"The state probate court just signed the final decree," Arthur said, setting the bubble wand on the wrought-iron table. "The Morrison name has been officially dissolved across all corporate registries, philanthropic trusts, and property deeds."
"What did you name the new medical wing at Mount Sinai?" Liam asked, wrapping his arm around my waist as I sat beside him.
"The Rebecca Foundation," I smiled, thinking of my own mother—a quiet, hardworking seamstress who had spent forty years sacrificing every dollar so I could earn my business degree. "No corporate logos. No gold-leaf lettering. Just free pediatric medicine for every family that walks through the doors without insurance."
Arthur smiled warmly, his eyes crinkling. "Your mother would have been proud, Sarah. Immensely proud."
Lila came running up to the table, out of breath, her cheeks bright pink. "Mommy! Look! Look what I found under the stone!"
She opened her tiny fist. Resting in her palm was an old, rusted metal key that must have belonged to the estate’s previous owners decades ago.
"Is it a magic key, Mommy?" Lila asked with wide, shining eyes.

I took the key, looking at its worn ridges, then looked at my daughter, my husband, and my sleeping infant son.
"Yes, my love," I said softly, closing her tiny fingers back over it. "It's the key that keeps the monsters locked outside forever."
