Chapter 36 - The Steel Cables of Newark

When we arrived at Berth 24, the air was thick with the smell of diesel exhaust, burning metal, and salt water.
Two of our private security guards were being treated by paramedics on the asphalt, having been pushed back by the contractor’s heavy water cannons. Out on the concrete apron, our massive container cranes creaked under immense strain. Thick, five-inch braided steel cables were wrapped around the southern pylons, linked to the winches of the three tugboats churning the black water into white foam.
Standing on the deck of the lead tugboat was Evelyn Cross.
She held a yellow megaphone in one gloved hand and a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents in the other. She looked as composed and emotionless as a ledger sheet.
"Mrs. Vance!" Evelyn’s voice amplified across the pier over the roaring engines. "Order your guards to stand down! Under the Pennsylvania emergency probate decree, I am the court-appointed liquidator of Morrison Asset Trust. This facility has been declared an environmental hazard! We are initiating immediate demolition to comply with regional safety mandates!"
Liam grabbed a radio from Vance. "This facility is private property held by the Rebecca Philanthropic Foundation! Any damage to this pier constitutes intentional domestic sabotage under maritime law!"
Evelyn didn't even blink. "Your foundation owns the operations! The underlying sub-soil rights belong to the 1972 Morrison Land Trust, of which Brendan was the sole beneficiary! As his executor, I have determined this property must be liquidated to satisfy his outstanding medical debts and liabilities! Release the winches!"
The tugboat engines roared to maximum throttle.
The water churned furiously. The steel cables went drum-tight with an ominous, metallic shriek. A deep, bone-rattling crack resonated through the concrete beneath our feet as the first structural pylon began to tilt.
"Sarah, we have to fall back!" Liam pulled my arm, trying to guide me toward the security perimeter. "If that pier goes, the entire seawall collapses with it!"
I didn't run. I stood my ground on the shaking concrete, my trench coat whipping in the cold wind, looking at the lead tugboat.
"Arthur!" I shouted over the din. "Where was Brendan’s cell phone found?!"
"In the car!" Arthur yelled back. "Melted in the center console!"
"Then what is this?!"
I held up my personal phone.

A fresh incoming call flashed across my screen. An encrypted VoIP number routing through a satellite link in Flagstaff, Arizona.
I swiped the green button, hit speaker, and held the phone directly against the megaphone microphone on Vance’s tactical vest.
