Chapter 11 - THE SEALED FILE FROM SEVILLE

The morning sun over the Mediterranean was gentle, warming the terracotta balustrades of Villa Solaria as the gentle scent of ocean salt and blooming gardenias drifted across the cliffside.

I stood on the wide stone terrace, watching nine-year-old Isabella throw a rubber ball for Barnaby along the manicured rose paths below. Sofia, our devoted house manager whom I had promoted to head of estate operations, stepped through the arched French doors carrying a silver tray with fresh espresso and an unsealed courier envelope.

The envelope was stamped with the bold red wax insignia of the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Andalucía in Seville.

"Alejandro," Sofia said softly, her tone carrying a quiet, cautious gravity. "The courier arrived from Málaga forty minutes ago by motorcycle. He insisted on a personal signature."

I set my espresso cup onto the cedar table and took the envelope.

One year had passed since the afternoon I returned unannounced from Dubai, stepped behind the ornamental hedges, and caught my ex-wife, Beatriz, forcing my crying daughter to haul heavy trash bags through freezing mud while her lover, Javier de la Vega, drank my vintage wine.

Beatriz and Javier had been sentenced to eighteen and twenty-two years in state penitentiaries for aggravated child abuse, corporate fraud, and attempting to extort twelve million euros from the Vance Family Heritage Trust. The funds had been recovered, their assets seized, and our home healed.

Yet as I broke the wax seal, I knew the law rarely leaves loose ends without a final tremor.

Inside the folder lay a sixty-page legal petition: APPLICATION FOR EXTRAORDINARY JUDICIAL REVIEW & ASSET REVERSION, filed on behalf of Mateo de la Vega—Javier’s older brother and the managing partner of De la Vega Maritime Logistics in Valencia.

Attached to the petition was a claim asserting that Javier’s thirty-percent share in the luxury coastal marina adjoining Villa Solaria had been acquired prior to the criminal conspiracy using legitimate family capital, demanding an immediate freeze on our private harbor slips and maritime docking rights.

A shadow crossed the paper, but inside my chest, there was no panic. No hesitation.

I had built a five-billion-euro international real estate empire from the ground up. I had outmaneuvered corporate raiders in London, Tokyo, and Dubai.

Mateo de la Vega thought that with his brother behind bars, he could intimidate a father who had already walked through the darkest valley of his life.

"Sofia," I spoke, my voice low, steady, and razor-sharp. "Call Marcus Vance in Madrid and our maritime legal team in Gibraltar. Tell them the De la Vega family is knocking on our gates again. Prepare the full forensic audit of the Valencia harbor concessions. We answer them by noon."
