Chapter 13 - THE ENCRYPTED LEDGER IN GIBRALTAR

By Thursday evening, the legal battle shifted forty miles down the coast to the financial district of Gibraltar.
Inside the secure subterranean conference suite of Barclay & Sterling Private Trust, Marcus Vance, Lead Digital Forensic Auditor David Reed, and I sat around a thirty-foot polished glass table beneath the glow of multi-monitor arrays.
On the central screen, the decrypted offshore banking flows of De la Vega Maritime Holding Corp were cascading in bright green lines of data.
"The financial trail is conclusive, Alejandro," David Reed announced, tapping his keyboard to pause a complex international wire schematic. "Mateo de la Vega wasn't trying to protect legitimate family assets. He was laundering Javier's leftover extortion reserves through secondary maritime shell entities."
David brought up three certified banking manifests:
Transaction Alpha: €3,200,000.00 wired from an unlisted account in Panama forty-eight hours before Beatriz Moreno’s arrest last year, authorized directly by Mateo de la Vega.
Transaction Beta: A series of twelve forged cargo invoices billing the Spanish government for non-existent emergency harbor maintenance, used to funnel cash into Javier’s private defense fund.
Audio Intercept Gamma: A decrypted phone call recorded between Mateo de la Vega and Javier’s defense lawyer three weeks ago:
“If we force Vance to settle on the marina,” Mateo’s recorded voice echoed through the high-end conference speakers, “we can use the liquidity to pay off the appellate judges in Granada and reduce Javier’s sentence to four years in a minimum-security annex.”
Marcus Vance leaned back in his leather executive chair, a cold, satisfied smile touching his lips.
"They thought they were playing a chess game with corporate real estate," Marcus said. "In reality, Mateo just committed felony judicial bribery, interstate money laundering, and conspiracy to obstruct justice under the European Criminal Code."

I looked out the high windows of the Gibraltar tower at the twinkling lights of the cargo ships crossing the Strait.
"Assemble the criminal indictment, Marcus," I instructed softly. "Deliver the package to the Chief Public Prosecutor of Andalusia at sunrise."
