Chapter 10 - The Mole Inside the Fortress

The sickness came without warning on a quiet Tuesday evening.

Clara was in the nursery library, reading a storybook to Leo about a brave little tugboat, when the boy suddenly dropped his wooden toy. His small face turned an alarming shade of gray, and he clutched his stomach, letting out a weak, piercing whimper before vomiting violently onto the rug.

"Leo!" Clara dropped the book, dropping to her knees beside him.

The boy was burning up. Within seconds, his skin felt like scorching iron, his breathing grew shallow, and a terrifying blue tint began creeping along the edges of his fingernails.

"Mrs. Gable! Call Dr. Rossi! Right now!" Clara screamed down the hallway.

Ricardo appeared in the doorway three seconds later, having sprinted from his study at the sound of her scream. He took one look at his convulsing son, and all color drained from his face.

"What happened?!" Ricardo roared, dropping to the floor and gathering Leo into his arms.

"He ate the blackberry tart that was brought up on the silver tray twenty minutes ago," Clara said, her voice shaking as she checked the boy's pupils. "Ricardo, his pupils are pinpoint. He's not sick—he's been poisoned! Organophosphates or cyanide derivative!"

Ricardo’s blood ran cold. "The dessert was meant for my study. My name was on the silver card."

Dr. Rossi, the syndicate’s private trauma physician, arrived within six minutes, carrying an emergency pediatric crash kit. As Rossi administered an immediate shot of atropine into the boy's thigh and hooked up portable oxygen, the penthouse was placed under total, merciless lockdown.

"He will survive," Dr. Rossi breathed, wiping sweat from his brow twenty agonizing minutes later as Leo’s breathing stabilized into a deep, drug-induced sleep. "The dosage was calculated for an adult male of two hundred pounds. If Miss Vance hadn't recognized the chemical symptoms and forced him to regurgitate the first half, his heart would have stopped before I reached the lobby."

Ricardo stood by the window, his entire body vibrating with a homicidal rage so pure it sucked the oxygen out of the room.

"Nobody leaves," Ricardo said, his voice flat, devoid of human inflection. "Assemble every member of the household staff in the grand salon. Every chef. Every cleaner. Every guard."

Clara didn't join the assembly.

Her mind was working furiously. The dessert had come from the secondary pastry kitchen on the lower floor of the penthouse. While Ricardo began his terrifying interrogation in the salon, Clara slipped down the service stairs toward the walk-in pantry.

She pushed the door open quietly.

Standing near the dry-storage shelves was Mrs. Gable's supposedly timid assistant, Elena—a young woman who had worked for the Moretti family for three years. Elena was frantically shoving a small glass vial and a bundle of cash into a canvas backpack, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her keys onto the tile.

"Going somewhere, Elena?" Clara asked from the doorway, her voice deadly cold.

Elena spun around, her eyes widening in panic. In her right hand, she gripped a heavy stainless-steel chef’s knife.

"Move out of the door, Clara!" Elena hissed, tears streaming down her terrified face. "Volkov has my mother! He said he'd cut her throat if I didn't put the drops in Ricardo’s evening tea! I didn't know the boy would eat it!"

"He's three years old!" Clara snarled, stepping forward instead of retreating.

Elena lunged, slashing the knife in a wild, desperate arc.

Clara sidestepped the blade by inches, grabbed Elena’s wrist with both hands, and slammed the woman’s forearm against the edge of the stainless-steel prep table. The knife clattered harmlessly to the floor. Elena scratched at Clara’s face, but Clara used her lower center of gravity to sweep Elena’s legs out from under her, pinning the sobbing traitor to the floor with a knee driven hard into her spine.

The pantry door flew off its hinges with a deafening splinter.

Ricardo stood there, a silenced pistol in his hand, followed by Marco and four armed men. He looked at Elena pinned under Clara, then looked at the fallen chemical vial on the counter.

"Get up, Clara," Ricardo said softly.

Clara rose, her chest heaving. Ricardo reached out, pulled Clara behind his back with one protective arm, and leveled his gun directly at Elena’s forehead.

"Ricardo, wait!" Clara grabbed his forearm, feeling the iron tension in his muscles. "She said Volkov has her mother hostage. If you shoot her, you lose the link to Volkov's safehouse!"

Ricardo paused, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. He looked down at Clara, seeing the fierce intelligence shining through her anger.

"Marco," Ricardo commanded without looking away from the shivering girl on the floor. "Secure the prisoner. Trace the burner phone in her bag. Find Volkov's location."

He holstered his weapon, turned, and pulled Clara into a crushing embrace right there in the middle of the kitchen. "You saved my son's life twice," he murmured into her hair, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I owe you everything."

Clara pressed her face into his chest, her hands clutching his shirt, torn apart inside by the terrifying realization that she was falling deeply, irrevocably in love with the man who might have murdered her brother.
