Chapter 14 - The Don’s Reckoning

Victor Volkov stood in the grand salon of the penthouse, surrounded by his last six surviving mercenaries, holding a detonator wired to the building's gas mains.

"Ricardo!" Volkov shouted into the smoke. "Show yourself, you coward! Let's negotiate like civilized men!"

A shadow separated itself from the darkness behind the marble fireplace.

"There are no men here, Victor," Ricardo’s voice came from everywhere and nowhere at once. "Only the dead."

Before the Russian mercenaries could react, the ceiling sprinklers engaged, drenching the salon in a torrential downpour of cold water. In the blinding spray, Ricardo struck.

He moved like a ghost born of smoke and lead. Two shots took out the flankers. A combat knife severed the femoral artery of the third. When the remaining two raised their rifles, Ricardo used an overturned mahogany table as a shield, closing the distance in two massive strides and breaking their necks with brutal, terrifying efficiency.

Volkov backed away toward the shattered panoramic window, shivering violently, his finger trembling on the detonator.

"Stay back! I'll blow this entire tower into the East River!" Volkov screamed.

Ricardo didn't stop. He walked straight toward him through the rain of the sprinklers, his face drenched in water and gunpowder, his eyes dead and hollow.

"Blow it," Ricardo whispered, knocking the detonator out of Volkov's hand with a single, vicious strike.

The device clattered over the edge of the terrace, tumbling eighty stories into the void.

Ricardo grabbed Volkov by the throat, lifting the grown man off his feet and dangling him halfway over the shattered balcony railing, eighty floors above the glittering streets of Manhattan.

"You killed Lucas Vance," Ricardo rasped, his fingers digging into Volkov's windpipe. "You tried to poison my boy. And you shot the woman I love."

"Wait... please... Moretti... take the docks... take everything..." Volkov choked, his feet flailing uselessly over the abyss.

"I don't want your docks, Victor," Ricardo said coldly. "I want your silence."

Ricardo opened his hand.

Volkov’s scream vanished into the roar of the city winds below.

Thirty minutes later, the private surgical wing of Presbyterian Hospital was under military-grade lockdown.

Ricardo sat on the cold linoleum floor outside the operating room, his head in his hands, completely soaked in Clara’s blood. He refused to let the nurses bandage his own lacerations. He refused to sit in a chair.

Leo sat between his knees, holding his father's large, trembling thumb with both of his small hands.

"Cara come back?" Leo whispered, his hazel eyes wide and swollen from weeping.

Ricardo pulled his son tightly against his chest, burying his face in the boy's hair, letting his tears soak into the child's clothes. "She has to, Leo. God wouldn't be cruel enough to give us an angel just to take her away."

The red surgical light finally switched off.

Dr. Rossi stepped out through the double doors, pulling his surgical mask down. He looked at the most feared man in New York sitting broken on the floor, and for the first time, the doctor offered a gentle, reassuring smile.

"The bullet missed the subclavian artery by three millimeters, Mr. Moretti," Dr. Rossi announced. "She lost a significant amount of blood, but the repair was successful. Miss Vance is going to make a full recovery."

Ricardo slumped against the wall, a ragged, broken sob tearing from his chest as he dropped to his knees, pressing his forehead against the cold floor in a silent prayer of absolute gratitude.
