Chapter 3 - Blood and Shadows

The scream ripped through the manor at 3:14 AM.

It was not Leo. It was an electronic siren—shrill, deafening, and pulsing in three short bursts that signaled an immediate perimeter breach.

Clara shot upright in the grand nursery bed, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird. Beside her, Leo bolted awake, his eyes wild with terror, his chest heaving as the sirens triggered the buried horrors of the highway ambush. He began to hyperventilate, clawing blindly at Clara’s shirt.

"Stay with me, Leo! Look at my eyes!" Clara commanded, pulling him into her lap and wrapping both arms around his trembling torso. "Breathe with me. In... and out. Look at me!"

Heavy gunfire suddenly erupted outside the courtyard. The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of high-caliber rifles shattered the night, accompanied by the distinct shattering of exterior floodlights. Glass vibrated violently in the reinforced nursery window frames.

The heavy walnut doors swung open with a violent crash.

Ricardo Moretti filled the threshold, a matte-black automatic rifle held low and ready across his chest. He was shirtless, his torso an intricate map of pale battle scars, taut muscle, and dark ink. His eyes held no panic—only a chilling, mechanical coldness that seemed far more dangerous than any weapon he held.

"Down! On the floor, behind the mahogany dresser!" Ricardo bellowed over the deafening noise.

Clara did not hesitate. Rolling off the mattress, she hauled Leo tightly against her stomach and slid behind the heavy, antique oak dresser. She curled her entire body over the boy, creating a human shield with her own flesh and bone, burying his face beneath her collarbone so he wouldn't see the blood or the flashes of light.

"Good girl," Ricardo muttered, his voice dropping into an icy cadence as he took up a firing position at the bedroom threshold.

Footsteps pounded down the hallway—rapid, uncoordinated, and heavy. These were not Moretti guards.

"Clear the west wing! Grab the kid!" an unfamiliar voice shouted in a thick Eastern European accent from down the hall.

Clara felt the cold wood of the floorboards vibrate through her knees. Leo was weeping into her skin, his small hands clutching her blouse so tightly his knuckles turned purple. She pressed her lips to his ear, humming a soft, rhythmic tune beneath her breath despite the chaos. Row, row, row your boat... gently down the stream...

Ricardo stepped sideways into the hall, leaned his shoulder into the doorframe, and fired.

Three sharp, suppressed bursts echoed through the corridor. A heavy body hit the runner carpet with a wet thud, followed by a choked gasp.

"Two down on the second landing," Ricardo spoke into a tactical earpiece, his tone as relaxed as a man ordering coffee. "Marco, sweep the conservatory. Cut the main breaker. Let's see how well they hunt in the dark."

Suddenly, the nursery lights died. Total, pitch-black silence swallowed the room, broken only by the sporadic crack of gunfire in the gardens below.

Clara froze. The only thing she could hear was Leo’s ragged breathing and the faint rustle of clothing nearby. Someone was inside the room.

A hand reached out through the darkness, grabbing her shoulder.

Instinct took over. Clara swung her free arm with all her strength, her elbow driving upward toward where she calculated a man's face would be. Her elbow struck solid muscle and jawbone with a dull crack.

"Dammit, Clara!" Ricardo’s voice hissed through clenched teeth.

Clara gasped, pulling her elbow back instantly. "Ricardo?!"

"You hit harder than most of my recruits," he growled in a whisper, his hand moving from her shoulder to cup the back of her neck. His fingers were calloused, warm, and smelled faintly of cordite and gun oil. "Don't move. The hallway is clear, but they have spotters on the roof."

He lowered himself to his knees beside her behind the dresser. In the shadows, his face was inches from hers. She could feel the heat radiating off his bare skin, the absolute absence of fear radiating from him like a force field.

"Did they hit you?" she whispered, her voice trembling slightly now that the adrenaline was cresting.

"They'd need better aim than that," Ricardo said. His thumb brushed along the side of her jaw—a touch so surprisingly gentle it sent a violent shiver down her spine. "You stayed on top of him. Most people would have scrambled for the closet and left him exposed."

"He's a baby," Clara said fiercely, holding Leo closer as the little boy's breathing finally leveled off. "I don't run away from babies."

Ricardo was silent for a long moment. In the faint moonlight filtering through the shattered blinds, his dark eyes held a strange, unreadable intensity. "Nobody protects a Moretti unless they're paid to bleed, Clara. Nobody."

"Then consider me an exception, Mr. Moretti."

A slow, humorless smirk curved his lips in the dark. "We'll see about that."

He stood up as the estate backup generators roared to life, casting the room in low, amber emergency light. Marco, his lead enforcer, appeared in the doorway, his suit stained with dark splatter.

"Perimeter secured, Boss. Five hostile casualties. Two captured alive in the cellar."

Ricardo racked the bolt of his rifle without looking at his lieutenant. "Take them to the docks. I'll be down to handle the questioning in twenty minutes." He turned back to Clara, his eyes lingering on her flushed face and tangled hair. "Pack a bag for Leo. We're moving to the penthouse at dawn."
