Chapter 18 - The Fortress of Sorrento

The estate in Sorrento was not a vacation villa; it was a seventeenth-century stone fortress built on sheer basalt cliffs rising two hundred feet straight out of the crashing surf. Accessible only by a single gated bridge and a private subterranean funicular, it was virtually impregnable.

That evening, the fortress hummed with silent, disciplined tension.

Leo sat at the massive oak dining table, happily eating a bowl of handmade pasta while Barnaby rested his heavy head on the boy's sneakers. To Leo, this was simply another grand castle adventure. Clara had cleaned up, changing into soft denim and an oversized woolen sweater, but her stomach had been churning with an odd, persistent nausea since they arrived.

After Leo was tucked into bed in the central fortified bedroom under Mrs. Gable’s watchful care, Clara retreated to the private bathroom of the master suite.

Her hands shook slightly as she looked down at the small plastic stick resting on the marble vanity.

Two distinct, vibrant pink lines.

Clara leaned back against the cool marble wall, her heart hammering against her ribs like a drum. Pregnant. A baby. A child born of love, conceived in the sunlit peace of Amalfi.

Yet outside the window, armed men walked the ramparts, and an ancient syndicate was hunting them.

Tears sprang to her eyes—not of terror, but of an overwhelming, ferocious protectiveness. She smoothed her hands over her flat stomach. "Nobody touches this family," she whispered fiercely to the empty room. "Nobody."

She walked out into the master bedroom.

Ricardo was standing by the arched balcony doors, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, reviewing satellite maps of Naples with Marco on a tablet. His face was etched with exhaustion and that lethal, unyielding tension that Clara hated to see return.

"Marco, give us a moment," Clara said softly.

Marco nodded respectfully, tapped Ricardo's shoulder, and exited the room, pulling the heavy oak door shut behind him.

Ricardo turned, running a hand through his dark hair. "Clara, I've already contacted our allies in Rome. We are cutting off De Luca's fuel imports at the docks by midnight. Within seventy-two hours, his own lieutenants will depose him to save their margins."

"Ricardo, stop," Clara interrupted, walking slowly toward him.

"I won't stop until every single person who made you bleed on that floor is erased," he said, his voice rising with bitter, self-loathing frustration. "I promised you a clean life. I promised you a family free of this filth, and I dragged you right back into the gutter—"

"Ricardo, look at me."

She took his large, scarred hand and placed it gently over her lower abdomen.

Ricardo stopped talking. He looked down at his hand, then looked up into her tear-filled, glowing eyes. His sharp mind, capable of analyzing complex tactical ambushes in milliseconds, suddenly seemed to freeze.

"Clara...?" his voice was barely a whisper, completely stripped of authority.

"We're having a baby," she said, a brilliant, tearful smile breaking across her face. "Leo is going to be a big brother."

Ricardo’s breath caught in his throat. For the second time since Clara had met him, the mighty Don of Brooklyn looked completely undone. He dropped to his knees right in front of her, wrapping both arms around her waist and pressing his face against her stomach.

A deep, shuddering breath escaped his chest, followed by a quiet laugh that was thick with tears.

"A baby..." he rasped, kissing her abdomen through the woolen sweater. He looked up at her, his dark eyes brimming with an emotion so profound it bordered on worship. "You are my entire world, Clara. Every breath I take belongs to you."

He stood up, cupping her face with both hands, kissing her lips with a tenderness that made the surrounding fortress fade into nothingness.

"Now," Clara whispered against his lips, her eyes narrowing with playful iron. "You have exactly forty-eight hours to put an end to Don De Luca. Because I refuse to be pregnant in a bomb shelter."

Ricardo’s lips curved into a wicked, predatory grin. "Consider it done, amore mio."
