Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Gala Ballroom

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel glittered with the deadliest wealth in North America.
Beneath sweeping crystal chandeliers and gilded arches, the elite of New York’s high society gathered for the annual St. Jude’s Children's Benefit—a thin veneer of philanthropy masking the clandestine alliances between corrupt politicians, billionaire financiers, and the heads of the Five Families.
Clara stood near the edge of the mezzanine balcony, feeling every millimeter of the silk emerald gown Ricardo had ordered for her. The fabric hugged her curves like water, plunging slightly at the back, its deep green hue accentuating the porcelain clarity of her skin and the rich chestnut of her hair.
Beside her, dressed in a miniature black tuxedo with a velvet bow tie, Leo held a miniature silver glass of apple juice, watching the dancers below with cautious fascination.
"You look like an empress," a deep voice purred behind her.
Clara turned. Ricardo stood in a classic black tuxedo tailored to perfection, his broad shoulders commanding the space around him. Across the room, half the women in attendance were watching him with hungry eyes, while the men averted their gazes out of pure instinct.
"I feel like a target," Clara murmured, keeping one hand resting lightly on Leo’s shoulder. "Everyone is staring."
"They're not staring at a target," Ricardo said, his hand casually coming to rest on the bare curve of her lower back. His touch was burning hot against her cool skin, sending an electric jolt straight through her spine. "They're staring because they know you belong to me, and they're terrified to guess how much you cost."
"I don't belong to you, Ricardo," she reminded him under her breath.
Before Ricardo could respond, a mocking chuckle sounded from the velvet stairs.
"Look at this touching domestic portrait," sneered a man in his late forties with slicked-back silver hair and a diamond pinky ring. It was Victor Volkov, head of the rival Russian syndicate that controlled the Brooklyn shipping docks. Behind him stood two massive, stone-faced enforcers. "The Butcher of Brooklyn playing daddy. And who is this little bird, Ricardo? Did you pull her from one of your back-alley brothels to replace poor Julianna?"
The entire mezzanine went dead quiet.
The string quartet below seemed to falter. Several wealthy patrons backed away, recognizing the deadly tension flaring between two syndicate titans.
Leo whined softly, shrinking against Clara's dress. Clara immediately stepped in front of the boy, her eyes turning into flint as she glared at Volkov.
Ricardo didn't draw a gun. He didn't raise his voice.
He took three slow, measured steps toward Volkov. When he reached the Russian, he was half a head taller, his presence radiating an aura of violence so absolute that even Volkov’s guards flinched.
"Victor," Ricardo said, his voice conversational and quiet. "You have sixty seconds to apologize to Miss Vance. Or I will have your dockside warehouses burned to ash before your driver can pull the car around front."
Volkov’s smug grin vanished, replaced by an ugly flush of red. "You threaten me over an unpaid servant girl?"
Ricardo’s hand moved faster than the eye could follow.
His left hand shot out like an iron clamp, seizing Volkov by the throat and slamming him against the marble pillar with an impact that cracked the plaster. Volkov choked, his feet dangling an inch off the floor, his face instantly turning a deep purple as Ricardo squeezed his windpipe shut.
"She is not a servant," Ricardo whispered into the dying man's ear, loud enough for every mob boss on the mezzanine to hear clearly. "She is the woman raising the heir to the Moretti name. You disrespect her again, Victor, and I will feed your tongue to my hounds."
Volkov tapped desperately on Ricardo’s forearm, gasping for air.
"Apologize," Ricardo commanded.
Ricardo released his grip just enough for air to rush into the man's lungs. Volkov dropped to his knees, coughing violently, clutching his bruised throat.
"I... I apologize," Volkov wheezed, his eyes filled with genuine, humiliating terror as he looked up at Clara. "Forgive me, Miss Vance."
"Get out of my sight," Ricardo commanded.
Volkov scrambled to his feet and vanished down the stairs, flanked by his bewildered bodyguards.
Ricardo turned back toward Clara, straightening his tuxedo cuffs as if he had merely brushed a speck of lint from his lapel. Leo was staring at his father, his little eyes wide, but surprisingly, he wasn't crying. For the first time, the boy had seen his father use his strength to protect Clara.

"You didn't have to do that," Clara said, her pulse hammering in her throat as Ricardo walked back to her.
Ricardo looked down at her, his dark eyes ablaze with raw, undisguised possession. "Nobody disrespects you. Ever. Not in my city."
