Chapter 9 - Sparks in the Rain

The tension between them simmered like a hidden fire over the next four days. Clara kept her distance, watching Ricardo with new, calculating eyes, while Ricardo watched her with growing frustration and dark possessiveness.

On Friday afternoon, Ricardo broke the stalemate.

"We are going out," he announced, walking into the playroom where Clara was helping Leo assemble a wooden puzzle of the solar system. "Just the three of us. No security detail inside the car."

Clara looked up, alarmed. "Are you out of your mind? Volkov is still breathing, and you want to drive around without an escort?"

"Marco and a tactical van will trail two blocks back," Ricardo said, tossing a warm woolen coat toward her. "Leo hasn't seen Central Park since his mother died. He deserves an afternoon outside this glass cage. And so do you."

The afternoon in the park was surreal.

Leo ran across the damp grass of the Sheep Meadow, chasing pigeons with clumsy, joyful bounds, his high-pitched laughter ringing out under the autumn trees. For two hours, Ricardo wasn't a crime lord. He was a father who bought hot roasted chestnuts from a street cart, carried his son on his wide shoulders, and let the boy drop crumbs into his hair without a word of complaint.

Then, the sky cracked open.

A sudden, violent November downpour swept across Manhattan, sending tourists and families scattering for cover. Ricardo scooped Leo into his arms, grabbed Clara’s hand, and pulled her toward an ornate stone gazebo near the edge of the bridal path.

They collapsed under the stone roof, breathless and soaked.

Leo giggled hysterically, pointing at his father’s drenched hair. "Papa wet! Like a dog!"

Ricardo paused, looking down at his son, before a deep, booming laugh tore from his chest—the first time Clara had ever heard him laugh with pure joy. The sound transformed his face, stripping away ten years of ruthlessness, revealing the stunning, vibrant man underneath the mobster.

Clara caught herself staring, her heart pounding against her ribs for reasons that had nothing to do with fear.

Leo curled up on the dry wooden bench inside the gazebo, exhausted from the running, and fell asleep within five minutes, lulled by the heavy drumming of rain against the slate roof.

Clara stood near the railing, watching the rain pool on the asphalt.

Ricardo stepped behind her. He didn't speak. He simply reached out and gently removed her damp coat, draping his own dry woolen overcoat over her shivering shoulders. The warmth of his body heat clung to the fabric, enveloping her in the scent of cedarwood, rain, and him.

"Why are you pulling away from me, Clara?" he asked softly, standing so close his chest brushed her back.

Clara turned around, her back against the railing, trapped between the cold rain and his overwhelming heat. "I'm not pulling away."

"Don't lie to me," he murmured, stepping forward until she had nowhere to go. He placed one large hand on the stone post beside her head, effectively caging her in. "You won't look me in the eye. You flinch when I touch your shoulder. If someone threatened you, give me a name and I will end them."

"Nobody threatened me, Ricardo!" she snapped, her voice trembling with raw, conflicted emotion. "I just... I don't know who you are. One minute you're a monster who chokes men at galas, and the next you're carrying your son through the park like an ordinary man."

"I was never an ordinary man," Ricardo said, his eyes darkening with intense passion. "And I don't give a damn about the rest of the world. But with you... with Leo... I want to be."

He reached out, his fingers cupping the nape of her neck, tilting her chin up.

"Ricardo, don't..." she breathed, though her body betrayed her, leaning into his touch.

"Tell me to stop," he whispered, his lips an inch from hers. "Tell me you don't feel this, Clara. Tell me to walk away, and I swear to you, I'll step out into that rain."

Clara looked into his dark, tortured eyes, torn between the ghost of her dead brother and the living, breathing man holding her like she was the center of his universe.

She didn't tell him to stop.

Ricardo closed the distance. His mouth claimed hers with a fierce, starving hunger that shattered every defense she had spent days constructing. The kiss was rain-slicked, electric, and breathtakingly deep. Clara’s hands found their way into his wet hair, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the intoxicating storm of his touch.

May you like

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were gasping for air.

"You're mine, Clara," Ricardo whispered against her bruised lips, his eyes burning with an unshakable vow. "Contract or no contract. You're mine."
