Chapter 20 - The Vow Under the Sun

The private stone chapel of Santa Maria perched on the very edge of the Amalfi cliffs, bathed in the golden, late-afternoon warmth of the Italian summer.
There were no crowds. No cameras. No high-society mobsters or curious spectators.
Only a simple altar decorated with white olive blossoms and wild rosemary, an elderly local priest with kind, smiling eyes, and the sound of waves lapping gently against the rocks three hundred feet below.
Standing at the altar in an immaculate white linen suit, Ricardo Moretti looked out over the sea. Beside him, dressed in a matching miniature linen suit with a gold tie, stood Leo, clutching the velvet ring pillow with both hands like a proud little soldier. Barnaby the retriever sat obediently on the lawn outside the chapel doors.
The small acoustic guitar began to play a soft, traditional Italian melody.
The chapel doors swung open.
Ricardo’s breath caught in his throat.
Clara walked down the short aisle of stone tiles. She wore a simple, breathtaking ivory dress that flowed like liquid silk, a garland of fresh jasmine woven into her dark chestnut hair. Her face was illuminated by the golden sunlight streaming through the arched windows, her eyes shining with pure, radiant happiness.
When she reached the altar, Ricardo took both of her hands. His fingers, once known across the underworld for their cold ruthlessness, were warm, gentle, and trembling with sheer reverence.
The priest spoke the traditional blessings, his voice echoing softly against the centuries-old stone walls.
Then came the vows.
Ricardo did not look at any prepared notes. He looked directly into Clara’s eyes, his voice deep, rich, and vibrating with absolute conviction.
"Clara, the night I met you, my soul was an empty house filled with ghosts and lead," Ricardo said, his thumb tenderly caressing the back of her hand. "You walked across a room of armed men and showed my broken son how to breathe. And then you showed me how to live. You gave me back my humanity, my son, and our future. I swear before God, before our son, and before the child growing beneath your heart, that every breath I take will be used to cherish, protect, and love you. You are my home, Clara. You are my only peace."
Tears of profound happiness spilled down Clara’s cheeks, catching the golden light.
"Ricardo," she whispered, her voice steady and full of warmth. "I didn't fall in love with a don or a billionaire. I fell in love with a father who loved his son so fiercely it broke his own heart. I fell in love with the man who held me in the dark and showed me that family isn't about bloodlines—it's about who stands beside you when the roof caves in. I promise to stand beside you, to laugh with you, and to build a life filled with light, cookies, and unconditional love. Forever."
The priest smiled broadly. "The rings."
Leo stepped forward with immense pride, holding up the pillow. "Papa! Ring time!"
Ricardo chuckled softly, picking up the elegant platinum band and sliding it onto Clara’s left ring finger, right beside the dazzling diamond. Clara picked up the matching wider band and slid it onto Ricardo’s finger, sealing their union.
"By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared. "You may kiss your bride."
Ricardo pulled Clara into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet as his mouth met hers. The kiss was deep, joyful, and sweet as summer wine—a celebration of survival, victory, and everlasting love.
Leo cheered, throwing his arms around both of their legs in a massive group hug.
"My mama!" Leo shouted happily, his voice ringing out across the quiet sanctuary. "My papa!"

Ricardo and Clara laughed together, scooping the little boy up between them. They walked out of the shaded chapel onto the sun-drenched stone terrace overlooking the endless, glittering expanse of the Mediterranean Sea.
As the sun sank toward the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of gold, violet, and crimson, the Moretti family stood hand-in-hand above the cliffs—healed, whole, and completely free.
