Chapter 2 - The Hospital

Ethan’s arm was fractured.
Not shattered.
Not permanently damaged.
But broken.
Dr. Moreno looked at Victor across the private examination room.
“This did not happen from a normal fall.”
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“How?”
“Twisting force.”
Lily sat on another bed while a nurse examined the bruise forming across her abdomen.
Nothing internal.
No broken ribs.
She would heal.
Victor did not look relieved.
He looked guilty.
“You were with him six months,” he said.
Lily nodded.
“Did Serena hurt him before tonight?”
She looked at Ethan.
The little boy slept under mild sedation.
A blue cast wrapped his arm.
Lily swallowed.
“I saw bruises.”
Victor’s face went still.
“Where?”
“His upper arms.”
“Once?”
“Three times.”
“And you said nothing?”
The question cut.
Lily looked at him.
“I told Mrs. Vale.”
Victor frowned.
His household director.
“What did she say?”
“That toddlers bruise.”
“You believed her?”
“No.”
“Then why didn’t you come to me?”
Lily laughed bitterly.
“When?”
Victor stared.
She continued.
“You were in New York.”
“Then Miami.”
“Then Montreal.”
“When you came home, Serena stayed beside you.”
“She answered every question.”
“She told staff I was unstable.”
“She said if I bothered you, I would lose my job and my mother’s insurance.”
Victor’s expression changed.
“What insurance?”
Lily froze.
She had not meant to say that.
Victor stepped closer.
“What insurance?”
“My mother’s dialysis coverage.”
“How is that connected to Serena?”
Lily looked down.
“Blackwood Foundation pays it.”
Victor’s eyes hardened.
“I never approved that.”
That frightened her.
Then Marco entered.
“Sir.”
“What?”
“We checked the foundation records.”
A payment account covered Lily’s mother.
Authorized under household welfare.
Approver:
Serena Montigue.
Victor looked at Lily.
“She bought your silence.”
“No.”
Lily’s voice sharpened.
“She bought my fear.”
Different.
Victor absorbed it.
Then Marco continued.
“Mrs. Vale is gone.”
Victor turned.
“What?”
“She left before the gates locked.”
“How?”
“Service tunnel.”
Victor’s face darkened.
Only family and senior security knew about that passage.
Mrs. Vale had worked for the Blackwoods twenty-two years.
Then:
“The foyer camera?”
“Disabled from her account.”
Lily stared.
Mrs. Vale had not merely ignored bruises.
She had protected Serena.
Then the hospital door opened.
A child-services investigator entered with two detectives.
Victor’s men tensed.
Victor lifted one hand.
“Let them in.”
The investigator introduced herself.
Dana Brooks.
She looked at Lily first.
“Were you present when Ethan was injured?”
“Yes.”
“Will you give a statement?”
Serena’s threat echoed in Lily’s head.
Nobody cares about a nobody like you.
Victor said nothing.
Good.
No pressure.
Lily looked at Ethan.
Then Dana.
“Yes.”
Her testimony lasted two hours.
She described the dragging.
The kick.
The previous bruises.
The threats.
The hidden medication.
Dana stopped.
“What medication?”
Lily reached into her bag.
A bottle of children’s sleep drops.
Label removed.
“I found this in Serena’s room.”
Victor stared.
“What did she use it for?”
“Ethan.”
“How often?”
“I don’t know.”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“He would sleep for twelve hours after she watched him.”
Dr. Moreno took the bottle.
The ingredients were not routine sleep medicine.
Strong prescription sedative.
Dangerous for a toddler.
Victor’s face drained.
Then Dana asked:
“Why did you keep it?”
“Because I thought I might need proof.”
That answer changed the room.
Then Marco’s phone buzzed.
He looked at Victor.
“We found Mrs. Vale.”
“Where?”
“At Serena’s condo.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“She was burning documents.”
Victor looked toward Ethan.
May you like
His voice dropped.
“Bring me every page she failed to destroy.”
