Chapter 9 - The Empty Room

The hospital room was empty.

Ethan gone.

Isabella unconscious.

One security officer injured.

No gunfire.

A forged emergency transfer.

The gala had pulled attention away.

Serena used Rachel Dunn’s credentials and a second team.

Victor’s face became stone.

Then Lily said:

“Think.”

He looked at her.

“Where would she take him?”

“The airport.”

“No.”

Lily remembered Serena’s words.

I wanted Isabella’s place.

Not money.

Not escape.

A place.

Then Isabella woke long enough to whisper:

“The church.”

Victor leaned closer.

“What church?”

“The one where she watched us marry.”

Old Saint Agnes.

Closed six years earlier.

Victor and Isabella’s wedding chapel.

Serena had stood outside.

Uninvited.

Lily’s stomach dropped.

Police surrounded the church.

Inside, Serena stood near the altar holding Ethan.

He cried.

His cast pressed against her dress.

She had removed his coat.

Cold air filled the abandoned chapel.

Victor entered alone at first.

As negotiated.

Lily watched through a side corridor with police.

Serena said:

“You finally came for me.”

Victor stopped.

“I came for Ethan.”

Her face twisted.

Always second.

Always outside.

Then she held the child tighter.

“Tell me you would have chosen me.”

Victor said nothing.

“Tell me Isabella stole the life I deserved.”

“No.”

Serena’s eyes filled.

Then:

“You loved her because she was allowed to exist.”

Victor answered:

“No.”

“I loved her because she was herself.”

Serena laughed.

“What am I?”

Victor looked at Ethan.

“Someone hurting a child.”

Simple.

No romance.

Then Serena stepped backward toward the broken choir stairs.

Lily saw the loose board.

If she fell, Ethan could be hurt again.

Lily moved before officers stopped her.

She entered the chapel.

Serena turned.

“You.”

Lily kept her hands visible.

“Ethan is cold.”

“Stay back.”

“His arm hurts.”

“Stay back!”

Lily stopped.

Then spoke to Ethan.

“Hey, buddy.”

He turned toward her.

“Lil.”

Serena’s face changed.

The child’s trust was the wound she could not tolerate.

Lily continued.

“Can you reach for me?”

Serena tightened her grip.

“No.”

Lily looked at her.

“You can hate me.”

“Good.”

“But let him go.”

“Why?”

“Because every second you hold him like this proves you never wanted to be his mother.”

Serena froze.

“You wanted to be chosen.”

Then:

“That is not the same thing.”

Serena’s face collapsed.

Ethan reached for Lily.

Police moved one step closer.

Serena saw.

Then she made a choice.

She shoved Ethan forward.

Not gently.

Lily caught him.

They fell together.

Victor grabbed Serena before she reached the side door.

Officers closed in.

No dramatic revenge.

Handcuffs.

Ethan clung to Lily.

Victor knelt.

“Is he okay?”

Lily checked him.

Crying.

Cold.

No new injury.

Then Serena screamed:

“He will hate you when he learns what you are!”

Victor looked at his son.

“Maybe.”

Then:

May you like

“But he will learn the truth from me.”

That was the beginning of his real punishment.
