Chapter 8 - The Gala Trap

Victor wanted Lily out of Chicago.
She refused.
“No.”
He stared.
“You are not trained for this.”
“I’m not bait.”
“You are exactly bait.”
Lily’s voice sharpened.
“Then stop talking about me like I’m an object.”
Victor went quiet.
Then:
“You’re right.”
Progress.
The police plan used the gala.
Public.
Cameras.
Controlled entrances.
Victor agreed only because law enforcement ran the operation.
Lily attended under protection.
Plain black dress.
No jewelry.
Recorder hidden in her clutch.
Isabella stayed safe elsewhere with Ethan.
Victor arrived alone.
No fiancée.
No family performance.
Guests whispered.
Then Serena entered.
Red gown.
Perfect smile.
As if no warrants existed.
She used another woman’s invitation.
Walked through the ballroom like she owned it.
The room changed around her.
Victor did not move.
Serena stopped before him.
“You look tired.”
“You broke my son’s arm.”
Her smile flickered.
“Lily did.”
Then Lily stepped from behind a column.
Serena froze.
Lily said:
“I watched you.”
Serena laughed softly.
“A frightened nanny.”
Then:
“Still pretending people care?”
Lily held up the recorder.
“They cared enough to listen.”
Serena’s face hardened.
Then she looked at Victor.
“Tell her what you are.”
Victor said nothing.
Serena continued.
“The noble father.”
“The grieving husband.”
“The man who paid the clinics.”
“Paid the guards.”
“Paid the doctor.”
Guests started watching.
Police listened through hidden microphones.
Victor answered:
“I signed documents I did not read.”
Serena smiled.
“Exactly.”
Then:
“You think ignorance makes you innocent?”
“No.”
That stopped her.
Victor continued.
“It makes me responsible for what I chose not to know.”
Lily looked at him.
Good.
Then Serena’s hand moved toward her purse.
Officers tensed.
She removed a phone.
Pressed one button.
The ballroom screens changed.
Videos.
Victor’s private meetings.
Payments.
Threats.
Violence connected to Blackwood operations.
The room erupted.
Serena smiled.
“You wanted truth?”
Then:
“Here is all of it.”
Victor watched.
Some files real.
Some edited.
Enough.
His business allies started leaving.
Police blocked exits.
Then Serena looked at Lily.
“Now tell them he’s your hero.”
Lily answered:
“He isn’t.”
Victor looked at her.
She continued.
“He is Ethan’s father.”
“He failed to see what was happening.”
“And you hurt a baby to control him.”
Two truths.
Serena’s smile disappeared.
Then she whispered:
“You still don’t understand.”
She looked at Victor.
“I never wanted your empire.”
“What did you want?”
“Isabella’s place.”
Silence.
Serena’s face cracked.
Their father had recognized Isabella publicly.
Paid for music school.
Introduced her to society.
Serena and her mother lived in secret.
No surname.
No inheritance.
No invitations.
She watched Isabella receive everything.
Then Victor.
Then Ethan.
Serena believed life had chosen the wrong sister.
“I wanted one thing that belonged to her.”
Lily answered:
“A child does not belong to anyone.”
Serena turned on her.
Then police moved.
Serena ran toward the service hallway.
Lily saw the door first.
The same kind of hidden passage used at the mansion.
Serena disappeared.
Officers followed.
Then the ballroom lights went out.
A fire alarm sounded.
And Lily realized Serena had not come to escape.
May you like
She had come to take someone.
Ethan’s live hospital feed vanished from Victor’s phone.
