The documents were half-charred.
Some useless.
Some readable.
Marco spread them across a steel table in Victor’s private office.
Lily sat near the door.
She did not want to be there.
Victor asked her to stay because she recognized Ethan’s care records.
She agreed for Ethan.
Not for him.
The first page was a medication log.
Dates.
Dosages.
Initials.
S.M.
Serena.
M.V.
Mrs. Vale.
Several entries marked:
Increase before Victor returns.
Victor read it twice.
“Why?”
Lily answered softly.
“Ethan cried more around Serena.”
“If he was sedated…”
“He looked calm.”
The perfect fiancée.
The happy child.
A staged family.
Then a second document.
A behavioral assessment.
It described Ethan as aggressive, difficult, and emotionally disturbed.
Lily laughed in disbelief.
“He’s fourteen months old.”
The report recommended a private residential pediatric program after Victor and Serena’s wedding.
Victor’s head snapped up.
“Residential?”
Away from home.
Away from Lily.
Away from Victor.
Then a legal memo.
If Ethan were placed under medical guardianship, Serena could act as temporary parental representative during Victor’s travel.
That gave her control.
Not custody.
Access.
Then Marco found bank transfers.
Serena paid Mrs. Vale $40,000 monthly.
From where?
A company called Montigue Child Wellness.
Serena’s nonprofit.
Funded by Blackwood charitable donations.
Victor was paying for the scheme without knowing.
Then another folder.
Lily Carter.
Her address.
Mother’s medical records.
Brother’s job.
Debt.
A psychological profile.
Victor stared.
“They investigated you.”
Lily’s mouth went dry.
One line read:
High attachment to child.
Financially vulnerable.
Likely to resist physical discipline.
Use mother’s treatment as leverage.
Victor closed the file.
The room went silent.
Then he asked:
“Why were you hired?”
Lily shook her head.
“I applied.”
Marco checked.
“No.”
He turned the laptop.
“Your application entered the system after the hiring approval.”
Lily froze.
Mrs. Vale had selected her first.
Why?
The profile explained.
Caring.
Poor.
Easy to control.
Then Marco opened a final recovered memo.
PHASE TWO AFTER WEDDING.
1. Remove nanny.
2. Transfer Ethan to private care.
3. Establish Serena as sole household authority.
4. Revise Blackwood family trust access.
Victor’s expression changed at the word trust.
The Blackwood Family Trust held shipping assets, real estate, and legitimate companies worth billions.
Ethan was its youngest beneficiary.
If Victor died before Ethan turned eighteen, the child’s guardian would influence trust distributions.
Serena wanted marriage.
Then guardianship.
Then money.
But Victor was alive.
Strong.
Not planning to die.
Marco found the next page.
Risk event scenarios.
Travel accident.
Medical incapacity.
Federal detention.
Victor’s voice became ice.
“She was planning for me to disappear.”
Lily looked at him.
“For Ethan?”
“For control.”
Then Detective Brooks called.
Mrs. Vale had started talking.
She claimed Serena never intended to break Ethan’s arm.
Victor laughed once.
A terrible sound.
Then:
“What did she intend?”
“Fear.”
Mrs. Vale said Serena wanted Ethan terrified of Lily.

So he would stop reaching for her.
Serena hated that he preferred the nanny.
She believed it made her look weak before the wedding.

Victor stared.
“Where is Serena?”
Nobody knew.
Then a security alert appeared.
Someone had entered the Lake Geneva property.
One vehicle.
Registered to Serena.
Victor stood.
Lily said:
“You can’t go alone.”
He looked at her.
“I won’t.”
Then Marco received another message.
A photograph.
Serena inside the empty facility.
Holding a folder.
Caption:
COME GET THE REST OF YOUR SON’S MEDICAL FILE.
Then another photograph.
A woman tied to a chair behind her.
Ethan’s former pediatric nurse.
The one who disappeared four months earlier.
