Chapter 6 - Fire in the Nursery
The fire started behind the nursery wall.
Not in the crib.
An electrical line.
Deliberately overloaded.
The sprinkler system activated.
Ethan was not there.
Good.
But the room filled with smoke.
Victor’s men and firefighters removed the crib.
Solid walnut.
Custom built.
Too heavy to move quickly.
Then Lily remembered Isabella’s words.
Inside the crib.
Not under it.
Marco found a hollow rail.
Inside:
A waterproof metal tube.
Ledger.
USB drive.
Three keys.
Then the ceiling collapsed.
The evidence survived.
The nursery did not.
Serena’s network filled twenty-two pages.
Doctors.
Accountants.
Private investigators.
Household staff.
Police officers.
One judge.
Charity directors.
Payments routed through Montigue foundations.
Some legitimate.
Many not.
Then one name stopped Victor.
Anthony Blackwood.
His uncle.
Senior adviser.
The man who raised him after his father died.
Payments from Serena.
Monthly.
For what?
Security schedules.
Trust documents.
Travel routes.
Victor stared.
“Anthony knew.”
Marco looked sick.
Anthony controlled much of the family’s legitimate corporate security.
He also knew every illegal connection Victor had inherited.
If Serena wanted power inside the Blackwood organization, Anthony opened the door.
Then the USB drive contained videos.
Serena hurting Ethan.
Not once.
Seven times.
Dragging.
Pinching.
Withholding food.
Sedating him.
Each time, Mrs. Vale watched.
Sometimes helped.
Why record it?
Insurance.
Serena recorded everyone.
Then another video.
Anthony speaking to Serena.
“Once you marry Victor, we move the boy.”
Serena:
“And Isabella?”
Anthony:
“She signs the guardianship transfer or she disappears again.”
Victor turned cold.
The wedding would give Serena social legitimacy.
Then she planned to control Ethan.
Then Isabella.
Then Victor through the ledger.
Anthony wanted what?
The trust.
If Victor became legally compromised, Anthony could argue emergency governance.
Serena becomes Ethan’s guardian.
Anthony becomes corporate protector.
They divide power.
Then one final video.
Anthony:
“Victor’s problem is loyalty.”
Serena laughs.
“No.”
“His problem is he believes fear is loyalty.”
Victor stopped the recording.
That line hurt because it was true.
His mansion was full of people who obeyed him.
Very few told him anything.
Lily had screamed.
That was why he finally saw.
Then Marco reported Anthony was gone.
His office empty.
Private plane preparing to depart Midway.
Police moved.
But Anthony had diplomatic travel papers from a Caribbean nation.
Fake.
Still dangerous.
Then Serena called Victor.
He answered on speaker.
“Did you find your dead wife?”
Victor’s voice stayed calm.
“Yes.”
Serena laughed.
“Then you know she signed everything.”
“She signed under drugs.”
“Prove it.”
“We have the ledger.”
Silence.
Then Serena said:
“No, you have a copy.”
Victor looked at Marco.
Serena continued.
“The original contains your name too.”
Victor’s face changed.
“What did I sign?”
“You approved Montigue Child Wellness.”
Victor remembered.
Charity expansion.
He had signed without reading details.
Then:
“You approved the clinic.”
Another signature.
A facility he thought treated trauma victims.
Then:
“You approved security transfers.”
He had funded the walls around Isabella without knowing who was inside.
Serena’s voice softened.
“You may not have known the room.”
Then:
“But you paid for the lock.”
The line went dead.
Lily looked at Victor.
He did not defend himself.
Good.
Then Detective Brooks said:
“We found Anthony.”
“Where?”
“At Midway.”
“Serena?”
“No.”
Then:
“But Anthony had a child’s passport in his bag.”

Ethan Blackwood.

Serena planned to take the baby out of the country.
And someone inside the hospital had just tried to access Ethan’s room.
