Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Horizon

One year later.
The summer sun rose warm and golden over our new private forty-acre equestrian estate in Milton, Georgia.
The rolling green meadows were alive with the sweet fragrance of blooming magnolias, wild honeysuckle, and fresh mountain pine.
On the wide stone terrace overlooking the spring-fed lake, a long teak dining table was laden with platters of fresh summer berries, wood-fired artisanal pizzas, homemade strawberry shortcake, and crystal carafes of fresh peach lemonade.
Gathered around the table were the people who formed our true family: Lucas, Emily, Detective Marcus Brody and his family, the pediatric doctors from Children's Healthcare who had healed Leo, and several of Leo’s new school classmates, sharing stories and laughing heartily under the clear sapphire Georgia sky.
In the center of the lush green lawn, nine-year-old Leo was running through the grass with Barnaby, a rescue golden retriever puppy Lucas had adopted for him from the Atlanta shelter.
Leo was sturdy, fearless, and full of life, kicking a soccer ball across the soft clover, squealing with untamed delight as the puppy chased his small sneakers.
Emily stood by the carved stone balustrade wearing a flowing white linen sundress that caught the morning breeze, holding a glass of iced tea.
Lucas walked over, leaning against the railing beside her, his hazel eyes crinkling with a warm, genuine smile.
"Look at him, Emily," Lucas murmured softly, watching Leo score a goal between two wooden posts on the lawn below. "Not a single shadow left in his eyes."
"Because you were his fortress, Lucas," Emily smiled, resting her hand against his sleeve. "You came back from the dark and gave him his kingdom."
Leo spotted them from across the lawn.
He broke into a full sprint, his bare feet slapping happily against the warm grass, skidding to a stop right in front of them and throwing both arms around their waists.
"Daddy! Aunt Emily!" Leo beamed, his big hazel eyes dancing with pure, unbridled joy. "Barnaby helped me score six goals today! Did you see the last one?!"
"I saw every single one, my brave captain," Lucas laughed, scooping Leo into a massive, warm embrace, lifting him high into the golden summer air while the boy squealed with delight.
Emily knelt beside them, wrapping her arms around both of her boys, feeling an ocean of profound, sacred healing wash through her soul.
The chains were turned to dust. The monsters were buried behind steel bars forever.
They were whole.
May you like
They were sovereign.
And their family was finally, truly safe forever.
