Chapter 18 - THE FINAL EVICTION

By late October, the old rural house in Dawsonville—the house where the chain had hung from the rusted fence, where the dark sub-basement had once held a crying child—was completely demolished.

Lucas had purchased the entire ten-acre parcel at the tax foreclosure auction for two hundred thousand dollars.

On a cool, sunny autumn afternoon, Lucas, Emily, and Leo stood on the gravel road, watching two massive industrial excavators tear down the rotting timber walls, the iron fence, and the concrete foundations, crushing them into harmless rubble.

Leo stood between us, holding Lucas’s hand on his left and mine on his right, wearing his denim jacket and sneakers. Barnaby sat faithfully beside his feet.

As the front porch collapsed under the excavator's steel arm, Leo looked up at the clearing sky.

He didn't flinch. He didn't cry.

A wide, radiant, fearless smile broke across his face.

"Daddy?" Leo asked softly.

"Yes, my brave captain?" Lucas replied, kneeling beside him.

"What are they going to build here now?"

Lucas wrapped an arm around Leo’s shoulders, kissing his temple.

"We are building a public botanical park and butterfly sanctuary for the children of Dawson County, Leo," Lucas smiled. "With swings, green lawns, and flower gardens where no fence will ever have a lock."

Leo beamed, throwing his arms around Lucas’s neck, hugging him tight. "I love you, Daddy."

"I love you more than the whole world, Leo," Lucas whispered.
