Chapter 16 - THE COURTROOM SHOWDOWN

At 10:00 AM on Thursday, Courtroom 5B of the Fulton County Superior Court hosted the final judicial hearing regarding the Vance family appeals.
Presiding Judge Katherine Reynolds—a formidable, silver-haired jurist renowned for her zero-tolerance stance on family violence and fiduciary corruption—sat behind the elevated mahogany bench.
Julian Vance sat at the defense table in a bright orange jail jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles bound in heavy transport chains. Beside him sat two court-appointed public defenders.
Across the aisle sat Lucas, Emily, and Marcus Brody.
"Counsel," Judge Reynolds began, her deep voice booming across the silent chamber. "This court has reviewed the complete unsealed forensic financial files, the verified wire intercepts, and the sworn depositions from Arrendale State Prison."
Judge Reynolds looked down at Julian with an expression of cold, unyielding judicial disgust.
"The actions of Julian Vance and Clara Vance represent a coordinated, ruthless campaign of child torture, financial racketeering, and systematic perjury," Judge Reynolds declared.
The judge slammed her heavy walnut gavel onto the sound block with an explosive, ringing crack.
BANG.
"All pending appeals, motions for trust reversion, and asset dispute claims are hereby dismissed with prejudice!" Judge Reynolds ruled. "Julian Vance is remanded to the custody of the United States Bureau of Prisons to serve a mandatory minimum sentence of twenty-four years without eligibility for federal parole."
Judge Reynolds struck her gavel a second time.
BANG.
"A permanent, lifetime protective injunction is entered barring Julian Vance and Clara Vance from ever contacting, approaching, or attempting to locate Leo Vance or Emily Vance. Bailiff, remove the prisoner."

Julian slumped forward in his chains, letting out a broken, shuddering sob as the armed marshals hauled him to his feet and led him through the heavy iron holding door.
We stood up, smoothed our coats, and walked out into the warm Atlanta sunshine, leaving the dark past locked behind steel bars forever.
