Chapter 19 - LEO’S FIRST EQUESTRIAN DERBY

In early May, the private equestrian arena at the Milton Country Club hosted the annual North Georgia Junior Derby.

Two hundred parents, teachers, and trainers sat in the shaded timber grandstands under a brilliant sapphire sky, watching young riders navigate the cross-country jumping course.

Riding atop Starlight—a magnificent, gentle white Welsh pony Lucas had bought for him—was nine-year-old Leo.

Leo wore tailored beige riding breeches, polished black leather boots, a crisp navy show jacket, and a velvet helmet, his silver medallion tucked neatly beneath his tie.

His posture was straight, elegant, and fearless.

The starting horn sounded across the valley.

With a gentle, confident touch on the reins, Leo guided Starlight through the obstacle course with flawless precision, clearing the six-foot water jump and the double-timber oxer with effortless grace.

The grandstands erupted into thunderous cheers and applause as Leo crossed the finish line with zero penalty points.

The head judge announced over the loudspeaker:

"First Place, Blue Ribbon Champion: Leo Vance on Starlight!"

Leo beamed with pure, untamed joy, patting his pony's neck as he trotted toward the winner's circle where Lucas, Emily, and Marcus Brody were waiting.

Barnaby, wearing a blue victory bandana, barked happily from the rail, wagging his tail as Leo dismounted and ran straight into Lucas’s open arms.

"Daddy! Aunt Emily! Look at the big blue ribbon!" Leo cheered, holding up the satin rosette with both hands.

Lucas lifted his son high into the air, spinning him around while Leo laughed with pure delight, burying his face into his father’s shoulder.

"You rode like a king, my brave champion," Lucas laughed, kissing both of his cheeks.

Emily stepped forward, pinning the blue ribbon to Starlight’s bridle, her heart overflowing with an ocean of pure, unbreakable happiness.

He was whole. He was sovereign. He was free.
