Chapter 2 - The Bolt Cutters at the Fence

Within six minutes, the quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac exploded into a sea of flashing red and cobalt strobe lights.
Three Alpharetta Police cruisers and a specialized tactical paramedic unit screeched across the circular driveway, their sirens cutting through the suburban calm.
Leading the detail was Detective Marcus Brody—a veteran lead investigator with the Fulton County Special Victims Unit—flanked by Paramedic Captain David Reed carrying heavy steel bolt cutters and a pediatric trauma kit.
"Police! Nobody move!" Detective Brody shouted as four armed officers cleared the side gate with weapons drawn.
Detective Brody took in the scene in a fraction of a second: the heavy iron chain, the padlock digging into Leo’s bruised flesh, and me shielding the weeping boy with my own body.
"Paramedics, cut that chain immediately!" Detective Brody commanded, his voice dark with fury.
Captain Reed knelt beside us, positioning the jaws of the heavy industrial bolt cutters across the hardened steel shackle.
SNAP.
The metal link severed with a sharp, ringing crack that echoed off the fence. The heavy chain fell away into the grass with a dull thud.
Captain Reed gently examined Leo’s ankle, spraying cold antiseptic onto the raw, blistered lacerations before wrapping the joint in sterile gauze.
"Severe localized tissue compression, stage-two dehydration, and blunt-force contusions along the zygomatic arch," Captain Reed reported to his partner. "We need to transport under code-three protocols to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for intravenous hydration and a complete pediatric trauma panel."
As they lifted Leo onto the stretcher, the front door of the mansion burst open.
Rebecca was being escorted onto the porch by two female police officers. She had changed into a dark designer coat and was frantically clutching a locked leather briefcase against her chest, her face pale, sweaty, and twisted in rage.
"Detective, this is an unlawful warrantless search!" Rebecca wailed, thrashing against the officers' grip. "I am Rebecca Sterling-Vance! My husband is the senior managing partner at Vance Capital! You cannot enter my private residence without a signed warrant from Judge Sterling!"
Detective Brody stepped onto the porch, pulling an emergency telephonic search warrant signed by the Chief Magistrate of Fulton County from his tactical binder.
"The warrant was signed four minutes ago under exigent circumstances of aggravated child endangerment, Ms. Sterling," Detective Brody stated with icy authority. "Take the briefcase."
An officer seized the leather folio from Rebecca’s hands, forcing the lock with a pry tool.
Inside lay stacks of cash, three counterfeit Canadian passports, and a set of heavy brass keys tagged with a label that made my blood run sub-zero:
NORTH GEORGIA CONVALESCENT SANITARIUM — WING 4B.
Detective Brody looked at the keys, then looked into Rebecca’s wide, terrified eyes.
"Where is Lucas Sterling, Rebecca?" Detective Brody whispered.

Rebecca pressed her lips together in stubborn, venomous silence.
"Officer," Brody commanded coldly. "Cuff her and put her in the back of the cruiser. We are tearing this property apart from the roof to the foundation."
