Steven Cole visited the hospital the following afternoon.
He stood awkwardly near the door, holding a small paper bag.
“I brought food,” he said. “The nurse told me you keep forgetting to eat.”
I motioned for him to sit.
For years, Steven had been Adrian’s second-in-command.
He had watched Adrian humiliate employees.
He had watched him cheat investors.
And he had looked away.
“I should have stopped him earlier,” Steven said.
“Yes.”
He seemed surprised by my answer.
“I expected you to say it wasn’t my fault.”
“It wasn’t your violence. But it was your silence.”
He looked down.
“I told myself I needed proof.”
“You needed courage.”
He nodded slowly.
Then he handed me a flash drive.
“What is this?”
“Copies of Adrian’s private records. I started saving them eight months ago.”
“Why?”
“Because he asked me to destroy documents. That was when I realized the company wasn’t merely struggling. It was criminal.”
The drive contained emails, false reports, offshore transfers, and messages between Adrian and Vanessa.
One exchange stopped me cold.
Vanessa had asked what would happen if I lost the pregnancy.
Adrian had replied:

I read the sentence twice.
My body went numb.
He had not merely ignored the risk to our children.

Steven covered his face.
“I’m sorry.”
I handed the drive to Claire.
