Adrian’s attorneys filed an emergency lawsuit claiming the takeover was illegal.
They argued that I had acted under emotional distress.
They called me unstable.
Vindictive.
Hormonal.
The language was insulting but predictable.
Claire read their filing beside my hospital bed.
“They’re claiming you lacked capacity because you were injured.”
“I approved the preliminary authorization three days before the party.”
Claire smiled.
“That is why I enjoy working with you.”
Adrian did not know the takeover trigger required two approvals.
The first had been signed from my attorney’s office while I was calm, medically stable, and accompanied by witnesses.
The second merely activated a process already authorized.
There was also a clause Adrian himself had signed years earlier.
If fraud, misappropriation, or misconduct threatened the collateral, Bellweather could assume immediate operational control.
He had barely read it.
He believed contracts were for weaker people.
During the hearing, Adrian appeared by video in a dark suit.
His bruised ego looked worse than his jail uniform ever could.
His attorney argued for twenty minutes.
Then Claire displayed the signed agreement.
The judge read the clause twice.
“Mr. Cross personally initialed this page?”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
Adrian leaned toward his attorney.
The judge continued.
“And forensic accountants have identified substantial evidence of asset diversion?”
“Yes.”
The lawsuit was dismissed.
Before ending the hearing, the judge addressed Adrian directly.
“Mr. Cross, this court will not reward a man for ignoring the legal obligations he voluntarily accepted.”
Adrian’s expression cracked.
For the first time, he looked exactly like what he was.
